Girls Make Record by Marching Sixteen Miles

Misses Louise and Marie Waddell of Eagle Lake walked sixteen miles from Eagle Lake to Columbus to prove they could match Pershing era marching. They left at 7:30 a.m. and arrived by 1:30 p.m. Staying firm against ride offers, they declined a commemorative dance. Eagle Lake friends later collected them by car.

Rural School Day Draws Record Crowd in Brazos County

Brazos County rural schools visited Bryan today for the largest attendance at a meeting held at the high school. Professor Templeton presided as Williams praised the schools for their interest in athletics and education. Scholarships and numerous spelling and athletic contests highlighted the day with results promised Monday.

February births and deaths in Texas rise in 1940 report

Austin Texas March 22 Births reported for February totalled 4142 by the state registrar of vital statistics while deaths numbered 2372 Tuberculosis pneumonia and influenza lead the death list with 281 tuberculosis deaths and more than 200 from the others. Deaths under one year old reached 340 with 260 deaths among those aged 20 to 30.

Castor beans prove successful near San Benito

San Benito Texas March 23 one hundred fifty acres of castor beans have been planted near the city after two years of experiments. The industry may be permanently established as car loads have been tested by manufacturers proving the beans good. Demand is unlimited and the US imports about 100000 gallons of oil from India annually. Imports are declining due to the European war. The San Benito district has no US rival, said planter Mr Boyes. Indian yields are about twenty five bushels per acre, but local tests suggest doubling that yield.
