Mrs. Sid Reynolds of Bastrop visits Bryan for a week staying with her brothers J. D. Martin and Ed S. Martin. Also in Bryan are Mrs. Joe Wolfe and Mrs. Stacy Wolfe of Benchley visiting after the death of their father W. Havel. Dr. H. F. Gregg and son Henry of Lufkin were in Bryan for a short visit. Bryan wed at College Station.
More than 200 men are now on the payroll of construction firms building highways bridges and culverts in this West Texas section.
Fort Worth March 9 The state Democratic executive committee voted 20 to 6 to require candidates for congressman at large to run for a place one two or three in the July primaries.
Ruth Hanna McCormick former Illinois congresswoman widow of Medill McCormick married Albert G Simms of Albuquerque in the Grace Episcopal church ceremony conducted by Rev Paul G Roberts. Mrs McCormick had been visiting Colorado Springs to be near her children Ruth and Medill at private schools. Simms a former New Mexico congressman.
Fourteen workmen are believed killed in a gas purification tank explosion at the Public Service Electric and Gas Company in Camden J March 0 Four were injured. The blast shook a wide area and a large crowd gathered as fire was extinguished. The tank uses charcoal acids and sawdust to purify gas.
Nine communities in Williamson county agree to form a cotton breeding farm meeting government standards. The effort aims to improve local yields under official guidelines as of March.
Phocian S. Park Jr. visits Bryan parents before moving to Austin to become Assistant Construction Engineer in the State Highway Commission. He succeeds C. D. Wells and will work under Chief Construction Engineer G. G. Edwards after previously serving near Crockett. Park is noted for broad experience in highway construction.
Special to The Eagle reports continued cold across Bryan and vicinity with freezing coastal temperatures 22 to 26 tonight and fair conditions Thursday. East Texas experiences fair skies, sharp cold, and freezing to the coast from 16 to 24 degrees in the north and 30 to 2 in the lower Rio Grande Valley tonight, with fair and slowly rising temps Thursday. West Texas sees cold but easing conditions, freezing in the southeast tonight, partly cloudy skies, and slowly rising temps Thursday.
Dr. T. O. Walton, president of A. and M. College, told Bryan Lions Tuesday that fear dominates the economic mood and may deepen hardships unless people overcome it. He noted President Hoover's efforts to lift the nation from the low mood and urged recalibration amid uncertain times.

The Bryan Fire Prevention Board reorganized Tuesday naming C. E. Jenkins as chair James Whaley as vice chair and H. A. Burger as secretary treasurer. A committee led by Jenkins Burger and Fire Chief C Gries ser will review house to house and building inspections to educate residents on unseen fire hazards. They will report at a special meeting and coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce Fire Prevention Committee and the Fire Insurance Exchange soon.
Mrs. J. S. Doane, who went to Temple Monday to be at George Eisert's bedside, telephoned from Cameron Tuesday that he is under treatment in a Temple hospital and was resting more comfortably when she left. Friends here are glad for any improvement despite the serious condition.
Dispatches from Washington report that WTAW the radio station at Texas A and M College has been granted renewal of its license by the Federal Radio Commission.
The storm moved east overnight leaving about a hundredth inch of snow in the Panhandle and bringing rain and sleet to South Texas and the Gulf Coast. East Texas saw significant fruit damage while North East Texas endured the coldest weather of the winter and most of the state was clear. Temperatures ranged from 12 to 36 degrees across San Angelo Pampa Amarillo Corsicana Tyler Houston and Brownsville.
Bryan residents reported a thick frost seen this morning with surface coverage limited. Government thermometers recorded a low of 26 degrees last night and 31 degrees at 10 AM. Fruit trees in bloom suffered damage and shrubs showed withered foliage as colder weather persists with another cold night expected across East Texas.
Wavrin Havel a long time resident farmer of the Smetana community died at home Tuesday night after a brief illness. Born in Czecho Slovakia August 10 1857 he was about 75. He came to America thirty years ago settling in Brazos County and lived there since 1902. Funeral at 9 45 from his daughter’s home on West 26th street and St Joseph’s Church at 1 6 o clock. Burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Survivors include his widow four sons five daughters and twenty grandchildren. McCulloch Dansby in charge with bearers listed.
Thomas Henry Armstrong Cal English and Norman Miller three Black men were granted a new trial by the court of criminal appeals for the robbery of Rufus and Charlie Hunter on a freight train near Osse last year. Charlie Hunter was killed during the incident. The reversal cited missing venire members and the sheriff’s selection of replacement jurors.
Mrs Milton Lee learned Tuesday afternoon of the death of her only uncle K W Jackson at his Liberty home. The funeral was held at 4 PM in the family burying ground at Livingston. Mrs Lee did not attend due to extreme cold and bad roads.
Mrs H E Malone 73 a pioneer woman evangelist of the Southern Methodist church died in El Paso on Tuesday friends said she was ordained 40 years ago by the Louisiana conference of the church her death announced March 9 via AP report
Bruce Duncan manager and Charles Caldwell of Birmingham Alabama killed a large mountain lion at a local dude ranch near Alpine after a chase with dogs lasting about an hour. The animal had killed four goats and several sheep on the ranch.
Washington March 9 The Ways and Means committee says no other revenue would yield the needed amount while a 2 percent manufacturers tax is expected to raise 595 million dollars. The tax bill formal consideration begins tomorrow and aims to produce 1.096 billion dollars in the next fiscal year.

Mayor James M Curley said a reliable source told him the Lindbergh baby had been returned to its parents Sunday night and that police were not informed for 72 hours. He cited an insurance man as the informant and noted the parents planned no police notification until after the period. Police said progress had been made at Hopewell but gave no details.
In Englewood New Jersey March 9 a Morrow family member stated for Mrs. Morrow the baby's grandmother that the infant had not been returned.
Austin March 9 reports to the state fire insurance department show January fire losses totaling $1 221 024 across 195 Texas cities and towns. Unknown causes accounted for $730 505, vacant houses $149 278, matches and smoking $54, incendiary causes listed but incomplete in the summary.
