Texas Fire Reports Show Preventable Blaze Share High

The Texas state fire marshal division reports 72 000 fires since December 10 1910 with 34 202 in dwellings and 37 798 on mercantile risks. Of dwelling fires 66 5 percent were preventable and 10 5 percent unpreventable. Unknown causes account for 23 percent overall. Assuming similar patterns, preventable mercantile fires run about 72 5 percent and dwellings about 86 3 percent.

Short Skirts and Expensive Shoes Forecast

Philadelphia report notes that longer skirts hurt shoe sales by about 10 million dollars yearly. A D Anderson of Boston urges designers and dealers to keep skirts short and promote high boots. He says prosperous women will pay around $20 for quality fashion boots.

Bremen Submarine Not Lost Says Afton Bladet

The Bremen was never intended to voyage to the United States but to supply armed U boats, according to a letter cited by Afton Bladet. The ship’s missions allegedly extend the radius and endurance of German submarines while the reported U S trip was a deliberate feint to mislead Entente ships.

Bryan Baptist Academy finishes season with win over Wellborn

The Bryant Baptist Academy closed its basketball season by defeating Wellborn 15 to 6 at 10 30 AM before a good crowd. It was the second meeting of the season with Wellborn winning the first game and no third game planned. A notice at College offers 100 head of shoats for sale at 84 cents per pound.

Deficiency Ap Propriation Urged in Texas

Comptroller H. B. Terrell recommends a 1 350 000 appropriation to pay county official fees for the next two fiscal years. The largest request of its kind, the sum aims to cover claims and avoid past deficiencies that caused delays. If approved, no further deficiencies would be needed.

Hogs in Chicago Reach Record Price

Chicago February 22 Associated Press hogs sold near 13 dollars per hundred pounds at the Union stock yards the highest price in the market's history. A meat shortage drives the rise while hogs last year brought about 8.85 dollars per hundred pounds. Commission men estimate a million hogs short across eleven major markets nationwide.

Amsterdam Feb 22 The frontier correspondent of the Telegraaf says a strike at the Krupp works in Essen involves 17 000 workers. The workers demand higher wages and increased food rations and many strikers have been sent to the front.

Late Freeze Not Disastrous Across Texas

State Agriculture Department field reports indicate the recent freeze caused limited damage overall. The lower Rio Grande valley saw garden truck losses, the Panhandle saw slight grain damage, stock survived with minimal loss, western Texas shows excellent prospects for a large small grain crop, and East Texas reports excessive rains.

Barn Fire Destroys Barn of C. H. Jones in Buchanan Addition

Last night at nine o'clock a barn belonging to C. H. Jones in the Buchanan addition east part of the cay was totally destroyed by fire. It contained 400 bushels of corn 100 bales of hay and other feedstuffs plus a buggy saddle and harness all uninsured. Fire started in the loft the cause unknown. Firemen arrived after flames had enveloped the structure and the loss is several hundred dollars.

Court House and Jail Cites Guilty Plea and Detentions

A colored man known as Professor Adkinson pleaded guilty in county court to aggravated assault, and was fined five dollars plus costs for beating his lady. Morris Gary, colored, implicated in a robbery of Ed Mathis, a white man, was jailed. Oss Hampton, a negro, arrested and jailed on gambling charges. he was among gamblers who fled during a recent city raid.

Lease Filed for 141 Acres in Thomas Bowman Survey

A lease filed at the courthouse shows Albert Strastypke and wife Merio leasing 141 acres, more or less, to the Bryan Petroleum Association in Texas. Annual consideration is $25, under the regular oil agreement used in such transactions.

Golf at Bryan Sets New Course Marks

Syd Cooper, professional, broke the Bryan course record with 83 strokes while playing with Travis B. Bryan. The previous owner of the record was Bob Pebbles. Amateur record reached 35 by Mr. Bryan. Dorcas Parker, new to the game, shows promise as a fine amateur golfer.

Parker and Cooper win golf match at Bryan Club

Miss Parker and S J Cooper defeated Travis B Bryan and his partner by two holes in a 38 stroke round. Bryan conceded four strokes a hole as Parker played 80 to surprise Cooper. Club notes list officers and members and urge new members as work continues on the Country Club course.

Galveston chosen for 1917 Texas Press Association meeting

The Texas Press Association executive committee selected Galveston for the 1917 meeting, narrowly defeating Fort Worth with Waco and Mineral Wells as other bidders. Texarkana was chosen previously in El Paso but notified that it could not arrange entertainment, prompting the Galveston choice.

Italy’s War Tax Heavy on Industries in 1916

Correspondent reports Italy’s war tax on war industries for 1916 totaled 5 million dollars for 1,174 firms with combined profits of 18 million. In Turin 384 companies paid 5 million, notably an automobile firm paying 10 million. Taxation faced strict enforcement with penalties for underreporting earnings.

Sudan grass sample yields potential five to six tons per acre

Mr John I Wilson of near A and M College brought a Sudan grass sample to the Eagle office. The eight to ten foot tall forage appears superior with large foliage and seed. If a full crop matched the sample it could yield five to six tons per acre.
