A Bry an resident urges a Saturday Brazos county mass meeting at the court house to discuss building improved highways and all weather road systems. The author hopes county citizens, including diverse groups, will back a program tying town and county together and advancing shared interests.
In Columbus Ohio on July 24 women spectators packed the courtroom as Dr James Snook former Ohio State University professor faced first degree murder charges for the death of his co ed paramour Miss Theora Hix. Juror questioning filled the morning with potential death penalty under Ohio law if found guilty.
Miss Pattie Sims heads to Dallas with Mrs. M. W. Sims then to Boulder Colorado for September. Tom Zuber urges Brazos County voters to support a road bond, promising benefits and urging attendance at the Saturday meeting. Rex Holloman notes car tax savings as part of the road plan. Dorman siblings stay for A and M College, while a sister returns to Valley Mills.
A new farm machinery text titled Farm Machinery and Equipment has been published by McGraw-Hill of New York. Harris Pearson Smith and Daniel Scoates of Texas A. and M. College serve as compiling editor and consulting editor for agricultural engineering duties.
Bell Tait, a negro, admitted stealing an automobile tire from A. W. Meier of Wheelock. He pleaded guilty before Justice J. T. Mc Gee this morning and was fined.

A farewell luncheon was given Tuesday evening at Ville Maria Convent in Bryan to honor the nuns as they depart for a new field of endeavor. Sponsored by Mesdames James Rainey and Robert Harrison, the event drew many admirers in a testimonial to the sisters long service in Bryan and surrounding territory. Eighteen sisters attended as honor guests.
General Motors Corporation on Tuesday announced net earnings for the second quarter of the year at 89,149,323 dollars, up from 61,910,987 in the prior quarter and 91,799,398 a year earlier. After preferred stock dividends, earnings per common share were 2.01, versus 1.37 the prior quarter and 2.06 a year ago on a comparable basis.
A county wide mass meeting on good roads is being prepared for 3 pm Saturday. The Bryan and Brazos county committee will meet this afternoon to finalize the program and present data on possible road development with the state highway commission. The six month study covers concrete east west and north south routes and improved laterals tying into main arteries. Committee members report strong public interest and expect a large turnout to test sentiment for a practical plan.
Governor Dan Moody called for seven cotton states to join Texas in sending a committee to the federal farm board in Baton Rouge on July 29 to discuss the South economic issues. Telegrams went to Georgia Alabama Mississippi Arkansas Oklahoma North and South Carolina urging participation.
Miss Mary Lily Fountain daughter of Dr and Mrs W C Fountain of this city underwent an emergency appendicitis operation at Bryan hospital this morning at 7 o clock. Noon reports from her bedside were favorable and no complications are expected to hinder a quick recovery.
ST. LOUIS July 24 Pilots Jackson and O Brien completed 269 hours of continuous flying at 12 17 today surpassing the former endurance record by more than 22 hours The St Louis Robin which yesterday broke the world sustained flight record began its twelfth day in the air at 7 oclock this morning with the flyers up 264 hours The plane owners and friends offered 824 to each flyer for every 24 hours aloft if they stayed in the air.
Houston July 24. Pilots Loomis and Glass extended flight time above 160 hours pursuing the objective and growing closer to a new endurance record as the St Louis Robin group reportedly neared a mark. They aimed to surpass any record set by the Robin.
E Summers a retired Southern Pacific Lines worker returned to Houston after visiting Bryan with W M Foster whom he hadn t seen in 63 years. They recalled boyhood days in Richmond when Summers rode two race horses named Trust to Tuck and Will owned by George Foster. Summers travels widely and spoke of games where he walked away with all the marbles staked in their boyhood contests.
A. E. Hayes pleaded guilty before Justice J. T. McGee to using a small mesh seine and was fined 25 dollars and costs. A. E. Taylor and H. M. Hodnett, the other two charged, face trial this afternoon with Taylor requesting a jury trial and a venire summoned.
Last night ex-students and the Bryan High Athletic Council met at Sue Haswell Memorial Park to spark student interest in football and form a winning team for the fall. W. S. Howell outlined new field plans, bleacher seating for 1 800, and track and baseball facilities, with J. H. Freeland designing the field entrances. A follow up meeting will organize support from current and prospective students and ex-students to put Bryan on the map.
Earl Ward and Alvin Stroud of Childress and Cecil Scarberry of Paducah were released from the county jail after being arrested Monday night for loitering behind Eden Gun. They headed to A and M College claiming a promised job on the new stadium. Their release followed intervention by H. C. Vance of Bowie who vouched for them to Sheriff Reed and Chief Martin.
In Georgetown on July 24, the insanity trial of Harry J. Leahy, condemned slayer of Dr. J. A. Ramsey of Mathis, Texas, pauses after a defense request to delay testimony for a continuance. Jurors were selected in a case with prior capital verdicts and a pending sanity hearing before an impending Huntsville electrocution.
The regular monthly meeting of Penny employees at the J C Penny store held on Tuesday evening at Sue Haswell Memorial park resolved into a watermelon feast during the social hour. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. E R Bryant, Mr. and Mrs. H W Plumb and daughter Mary Alice, Mr. and Mrs. John Buchanan, Mr. and Mrs. R B Moore, Mr. and Mrs. O L Moore, Mrs. Fagan, Mrs. F H Pearson and daughters, Miss Doris House, Miss Velma Moore, Miss Lucy Darwin, Mrs. George Griffin, Frank Watson, Ralph Agan and Lucile Agan of Glennwood Iowa.
Passaic New Jersey July 24 three banks controlled by the New Jersey Bankers Securities Company a holding concern were closed today by the New Jersey department of banking and insurance.
Texarkana reports a pistol duel late yesterday left James Reynolds 45 fatally wounded after shooting veteran officer J. R. Walraven. Reynolds died today from his wounds without giving a statement. Walraven died before revealing details of the incident.
H. C. Van of Bowie Montague county visits Bryan praising Montague roads and critiquing Brazos roads. He notes boll weevil damage and farmers switching to truck farming and dairying while recounting family and travel with G. O. Groves family from Petrolia. They plan to return home tomorrow.
A social and business session of the Senior B Y P U at First Baptist was hosted Tuesday night by president Tom Sweeney. The lawn glowed with lights rugs and chairs and a watermelon feast followed the gathering.
The Bryan Lions Club discusses Brazos county road needs at the weekly luncheon led by W. S. Howell. Members pledge to attend the Saturday 3 PM district court mass meeting to hear the Good Roads proposition and potential concrete highways.
Japan deposited its instrument of adhesion at the state department and the Kellogg-Briand pact became effective at noon. Ambassador Debuchi presented the document and those present went to the White House where President Hoover proclaimed the treaty in force for the 46 nations.
A big barbecue is planned for next Wednesday to raise funds for the Smetana school. Mrs. Joe Regmund lists cakes, pickles, and money as needed, with last year’s contributors named. Community donors included families of Regmund, Wehrman, Kuder, and others, plus firms Brazos Bottling Works and Stephan Ice and Bottling Co donating ice and soda.
Secretary of War Good announced an effort to expedite the study of military expenditures with the aim of applying any possible reductions to the budget to be transmitted to Congress in December.
