ALTO Jan 20 George R. B. Terrell announced his candidacy for congressman at large. He cites 16 years in the legislature and 10 as agricultural commissioner as qualifications. He backs flexible legislation to lift mood, greater money issuance, lower tariffs, and abolition of redundant government bureaus.
Seven firemen were injured as Bush Temple a four story downtown structure housing musicians and music teachers burned in Dallas today. The unoccupied building suffered an estimated 60000 dollar loss as officials investigated the origin of the fire. Abe Rude owner had stored merchandise burned. The building, built in 1908 by Col William Lincoln Bush of Chicago, was recently sold to Rude.
Big Spring leaders pass a resolution of appreciation for the efficient work of Manager Lee Simmons and his staff at the state prison. The praise highlights economical administration and commendable efforts by Simmons and co workers.
News from Bryan announces the death of Julius Joseph Pressley aged 84 years 10 months 19 days at his country home near Cook's Point Burleson county after a long illness. He served in the Confederate Army at sixteen in Company E 38th Alabama Regiment Hood's Corps. Funeral at Shady Grove church Thursday at 10 with Rev. J. M. Nunley. burial in Draper cemetery.
Coordinated action by 125 000 organized farmers of Texas aims to solve agricultural problems and plan the 1952 campaign for Texas farmer organization. The 12th annual Texas Farm Bureau Federation convention in Dallas is set for January 27 28 and 29 with possible resolutions to strengthen the Agricultural Marketing Act.
Eastern Oklahoma officers converge on Muskogee after learning that Pretty Boy Floyd is in a makeshift fortress in the Ozark foothills near the Arkansas line. A planned expedition will use national guard equipment. Floyd is named as leader of a two bank robbery spree. Insurance rates on banks have doubled.
Sherman Jan 20 report records the second 34 car trainload of flour in three months bound for the North Atlantic seaboard. Sherman's Mills produced nearly 500000 barrels in the last half of 1931, the best half season yet, with one mill running 24 hours daily during the period.
D E Colp Texas state park commissioner spoke to the Bryan Lions Club about Texas State Parks recounting existing parks and proposed additions plus five park board bills passed in the last legislature. John H Tobin joined Colp. attendance prize went to Harry L Durham.
Weather report notes cloudy skies with chances of local rain tonight and Thursday. Warmer tonight in some areas. East Texas can expect similar conditions and warmer nights, while West Texas remains cloudy and turns colder in the north on Thursday.
Dr. Thomas S. Adams of Yale and E. Alvord ex-secretary to Secretary Mellon told the house ways and means committee that Canada's sales tax system is practicable and would yield substantial revenue. They had recently visited Canada to study it. Under Secretary Mills of the Treasury opposes the plan.
The Seguin Zeitung, a German language weekly, has been suspended after four decades of continuous publication. The newspaper had operated for 40 years before ceasing operations in Seguin.
Washington January 20. Senate and house conferees moved toward agreement on reconstruction bill details as President Dawes and Chairman Eugene Meyer prepared an organization plan.
Proponents of the Bingham beer bill finished testimony before the senate committee. Opponents will be heard next week. Matthew Woll appeared for the American Federation of Labor.
Houston witnesses testifying in the Jones murder trial include a janitor who saw Shilo Scrivenor rent an apartment near the Jones residence the day before the killings and leave soon after. Other testimony described hearing shots and locating the bodies, with a man seen peering into the Jones apartment. Scrivenor was not identified by any witness.
The South Plains will ship 40 cars of broom corn from last fall's crop with 20 cars already shipped in 1930 from Lamb and Gaines counties. Lynn, Floyd, Hockley and Lubbock counties were among those growing the crop last season as a substitute for grain sorghums.
Gainesville Kiwanis Club plans reorganization after a fall disbandment. A meeting with district Kiwanis officials led to appointing a committee to recruit new members.
Little activity in the cotton market with futures closing 2 to 5 points higher. Local spot prices remained steady at 6 to 6 1/2 cents per pound on a middling basis.
Four soil and plant specialists from Texas A and M College were summoned by the state to testify in a Franklin district court injunction case challenging the cotton acreage reduction law. The witnesses include Dr. J. J. Taubenhaus and three others as the suit proceeds before Judge W C Davin.
Postmaster General Brown told the Ways and Means Committee he favors higher rates to cover a potential 150 million dollar shortfall. He proposed raising first class postage from two to three cents per ounce, while opposed by NFPOC secretary Thomas F. Flaherty who warned it would cut business and risk postal worker layoffs.
Phoenix on January 20 reports defense questioning of venice men suggesting another person besides Winnie Ruth Judd may have killed Agnes Anne Leroi and Hedvig Samuelson. The LA confession did not name an accomplice as Mrs Judd faces trial for the Leroi killing.
Longview January 20. Gregg county health unit to start by February 1 after commissioners allocate 5000 dollars. Additional aid from state, federal governments and other agencies may raise 1932 funding to about 15000 dollars. A staff of five or more is planned with possible Rockefeller foundation and International Health Service support.
J A Sparks was re elected chief of the McLean Volunteer Fire Department at a recent meeting. Sparks also serves as city marshal and has led the fire unit since its founding ten years ago.
SAN ANTONIO Jan. 20. The body of a woman was found sewn in a blanket under a pile of rubbish by children near a street corner. She had been dead about ten days. An investigation was begun.
Will Rogers writes from Rome that he flew from Athens to view Vesuvius and mocks Mussolini as a dictator while praising his efficiency. He notes the Italian leader has achieved much with limited resources and signs the letter from Rome.
Austin January 20. The court of criminal appeals affirmed the 50 year sentence of Ernest Young for slaying Johnnie W Bradshaw of Kendall county. Bradshaw's body was found in a stream near Boerne in 1930 after a prior reversal and remand. Homer Edwards, same charge, has escaped multiple times from the state hospital at Rusk.
In Chicago on January 20 a sixth conference of railway presidents and workers organizations was deferred to allow executives to collect more data supporting their proposal for a ten percent wage reduction.
Officials expect the Lausanne reparations conference to be postponed from January 25 as the French chamber of deputies debate continues through Thursday and may push the opening to next week.
The Rio Grande Valley Bankers Association announces Harry L. Starr of Mission as president for 1932. Named as vice president is John C. Jones of Edinburg and Floyd Langford of Mercedes serves as secretary.
J E Stanford, president of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce, outlined four 1932 priorities at the annual dinner in Sbisa Hall Annex Texas A and M College. They include a city planning commission with park and sanitary improvements an airport meeting government inspection a major water supply for a larger area and a push for state legislation to allow city county government consolidation. Dr William States Jacobs urged a shift from money to people in governance while noting capital issues.
