The column recalls a failed attempt last fall to place a county wide stock law to keep livestock off roads. It notes insufficient precinct representation, urges renewed petitioning ahead of upcoming primaries, arguing safer roads and fewer auto livestock collisions. Mrs. George Foster and daughter Roseann visited Bryan friends after traveling from the Foster plantation on Brazos river. R. L. Poll of Dallas was named president of the Dallas Agricultural Club for the year, with T. C. Richardson as vice president. Mrs. W. Lewis of Waco visited with her son Henry Lewis, and joined by Mrs. Tom Wolf, Mrs. May Wolge and Hetty Wolf in the weekend gathering.
Brazos county schools must affiliate with the Interscholastic League by January 15 as advised to Mrs. W. E. Neely by Roy Hedickek, chief of the bureau. Bedichek notes late applications often miss admission, since the League constitution bans after date.
James F Crismore an automobile mechanic is jailed in San Antonio on a 2500 bond for allegedly passing a five dollar counterfeit bill in Bryan. Wille Boatcallie and Johnnie Boatcallie are held on 2000 bonds in Galveston on similar charges after federal investigators traced the case to Bryan.
Judge W C Davis ruled the Texas A M College admission matter is not mandated by constitution or statute and that the college board controls admissions. The decision was wired to the board’s counsel and the relators’ lawyer and capes the case for potential appeal.
The January Brazos County Health Committee meeting saw chairman Mex D B Cofer preside with secretary Mrs A M Waldrop. The annual secretary report praised a year of notable public health achievements in Brazos county and detailed work by county nurse Edna Abbott Shelton and colored nurse Sedaliah Wilson. Judge A S McSwain presented finance figures for the year, described as encouraging.
Judge W. Davis this afternoon denied the writ of mandamus to force Texas A and M College to admit Bryan girls to registration. The court held the board of directors has authority to set policy and no constitutional or statutory law requires admission of girls at regular sessions.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce sent a resolution to all Texas congressional members urging funds or legislation to provide crop production loans similar to last Congress. It calls small farmers the forgotten man and notes their readiness to work and strong loan repayments in the past two years.
Beason and Brown hosted their annual noon dinner at the Beason home on College road for county agricultural leaders. The event featured short appreciation talks by Mr. Benson and Miss Brown, with remarks from Travis Bryan KE C Martin Miss Sadie Hatfield BE R Alexander and W F Munnerlyn. Attendees included County Commissioners Pat Patterson Guy Boyett Will Conrad and more. Dr L B Elrod gave the invocation and benediction.
V. R. Glaszner of Dallas spent a night in Bryan as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Holmegreen. During the night a thief stole Glaszner's suitcase from his car parked in front of the homes. The car was locked but a window was slightly open, enough for the thief to remove the suitcase and escape.
William Kienberg Jr. of Hearne announces candidacy to represent Robertson county in the next session. He would take the seat currently held by Hon. J L Goodman. Goodman has not announced plans for re election.
Earle Graham Post 159 and the Ladies Auxiliary met to plan a visit by Cameron state commander L Val Perkins on Friday January 12 with a message for all veterans. The group approved inviting the public to hear Perkins and thanked the Auxiliary for gifting a new oil heater and for beautifying the grounds. A Legion firing squad meets January 9, and the Legion Home will not be rented except to members with a nominal fee and cleaning deposit. A new hunting flag will be presented to Travis School to replace the old one.
Lon Gibson 21, identified as a negro, died in Bryan about two hours after a fall from a moving car on the road north of Stone City. Believed the back wheel ran over him. he was brought to Bryan for treatment but died on arrival. Funeral plans not yet set.
H. H. Renke of Bryan said a fur cape worth 50 dollars was stolen Friday night as he left the Baylor gym in Waco. He carried the cape on his arm when a thief grabbed it and vanished into the crowd. the incident was reported to police.
Brazos County Chapter Ameri can Red Cross announces executive committee meeting at City Hall on Thursday January 11 at 9 30 a m. Annual reports will be heard and a full roll call report directed by Rev J B Gliessner will be presented.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce outlines complete arrangements for the annual banquet to be held next Tuesday in the Mess Hall at Texas A M College. Col Ike S Ashburn of Houston will deliver the sole address. The event features a 45 minute floor show with music by the college orchestra and dancing. A ticket canvass will be conducted in Bryan and College Station with committees named for each city. New directors will be introduced at the dinner during the January 30 meeting.
Four CWA projects to employUnemployed teachers in Brazos County were approved by Superintendent Mrs. W. B. Neely. Plans include a night class for white adult illiterates, a night class for adult negro illiterates, a kindergarten for children of employed mothers, and an attendance officer for negro rural schools. Classes will be in Bryan and local city schools with schedules to be announced.
W. L. Penberthy told Bryan Lions Club that intramural athletics serve many benefits and are not solely a feeder system for varsity teams. He noted that every freshman must take one term of physical education and described the broad impact on student participants.
A Sunday meeting at the Baker Hotel in Dallas saw 36 Texas cities that own and operate utilities protest the inclusion of public utilities in a forthcoming power industry code. The resolution cites fears private firms would dominate any administrative body and seek to hinder municipal operation or benefits.
Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a roof blaze at the house of Mr and Mrs Earl Quortrup behind the J Sidney Smith residence on South College avenue. They extinguished the fire with minor damage only a small hole in the roof.
W. R. Allen a young Bryan attorney recently admitted to practice has been appointed assistant county attorney by the county commissioners court. The appointment follows his additional work in the county attorney’s office chiefly handling delinquent tax suits.
County tax office records show all but three residents who took beer licenses last fall renewed, leaving thirty still in business. It is expected that additional applications will be filed in May.
Dr. B A Sims 56 a Bryan physician died at Wilkerson Clinic at 2 15 Saturday afternoon from injuries suffered in an automobile crash on Highway 6 about seven thirty Friday night. Two others Frank Glover Anthony N M and R B Martin were killed instantly and Mrs Sam J Zimmerman survived with a broken arm and cuts. Dr Sims had served in World War I and previously worked with the Texas health department and Red Cross. Funeral services were set for 4 o clock Sunday at the family home drawing crowds across Bryan streets.
Plans for mid term examinations and the next half year opening are set at Stephen F. Austin high school and Bryan system schools. Examinations and enrollments will take the entire school week starting one week from Monday. Sixteen classes run this term for all grades except first three elementary grades which have no finals. The second semester opens Monday January 22.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation asked Democratic leaders for a three year extension of its loaning authority and a capital increase of 1.0 billion dollars. Rep Burns noted the exact capital rise—either 0.5 or 1.0 billion—had not been fixed. The request was sent to the House Banking Committee with loaning authority due to expire January 22.

Highlights cover rural school sanitation tuberculosis exhibits a health talk by Dr Bolivar Lloyd and involvement with the United States Public Health Service.
