In Bombay on January 6, Gandhi was spinning peacefully in Boona prison while the government completed the first stage of its drive against Nationalists. Police arrested virtually all leaders including several women. Women picketed shops urging a boycott of British goods as dozens of organizations were declared illegal.
The First Methodist church board of stewards met Tuesday night to discuss the new financing principles adopted. Oak McKenzie presided in the absence of M. Bethany, with members W. K. Gibbs Dr. E. P. Directors re elected officers, approved financials, and discussed relief limits for worthy cases. The group considered aiding employed but unemployed individuals, leaving the plan open for later. Officers re elected include Mrs J L Brock president and Mrs M B Parker vice president.
The Bryan Reading Club elected its year officers at the first January meeting held Tuesday at the Bryan Woman's club. Speaker Garner used a Bois d Arc gavel made by Sam Cowan of Comyn Texas to call the house to order. Cowan won the 1930 farm shop contest at Texas A and M College and later sent samples of his work to Professor Thurmond.
Senator Blaine of Wisconsin forced immediate Senate scrutiny of the reconstruction and finance corporation bill. Leaders aimed for action this afternoon with cadets still expected to pass the measure by the weekend after rapid action by the banking committee yesterday.
The Bryan city commission will hold its regular monthly meeting Friday night to transact routine business and discuss disposing of city property taken over by the city in lieu of taxes.
Carnegie Public Library directors through librarian Miss Willie Rogers set up two book substations in Brazos County schools. At Steeles Store principal Lee Cantavespig distributes books, and at Prospect School teacher Lola Price oversees them. Additional stations planned for vacation periods to aid rural children.
John Raskob opened talks with Democratic leaders on backing a prohibition referendum without a wet or dry stand. Senators Robinson and Garver led the discussions as opinions varied on whether the issue should be treated as a party matter.

Bryan Rotary heard treasurer W. F. Davis present the annual financial report and President A. M. Waldrop discuss policy. Davis also gave an oil merchandising and lubrication overview. Guests included J. H. Evetts and J. A. Taylor from the Southern Pacific Lines and Mr. Kelly of Swift and Company.
The Texas board of pardons reported adverse on Ira McKee's death sentence for the robbery slaying of W. R. Billingsley at Spstkenburg. Alfred Jackson, a Bexar County resident, will be electrocuted Friday.
Attorney General J V Allred asked Judge C A Wheeler to enter judgment for the state against Shell Union Oil Corporation in a multi million antitrust case. The Shell firm failed to answer. improper service likely delays trial until March term.
Hansford county's new courthouse, a $150,000 structure, will be officially opened and dedicated February 22. The building has been completed several weeks.
E L Ryerson Jr of Chicago told the senate manufacturers sub committee Cook county would need 26 5 million dollars for relief before September about half from private funds He said at least 1100000 were unemployed in Illinois
The February meeting of the Business and Professional Women's Club will focus on Public Relations with a dinner and guest speaker. Mrs. M. R. Bentley chairs public relations and aims to draw 100 civic workers from Bryan and College Station for a community wide program. Judge Lamar Bethea spoke at the recent gathering on civic responsibility, law enforcement, and related matters.
Representative Patman a Texas Democrat filed a House resolution to impeach Secretary of the Treasury Mellon charging stock ownership in shipping interests and conduct in commerce under a ban. Amarillo reports heavy Panhandle snow blocking highways and telephone service with 15 inches on the ground and Vega isolated. Temperatures around 14 degrees. Sanctions list: 50 Bell lines damaged as planes resume flights.
Cameron January 6. The Commissioners Court ordered reductions in ex officio salaries for county offices led by the county judge and county clerk. Other cuts include the county auditor, county commissioner, home demonstration agent, farm agent, janitor, sheriff, county attorney, district clerk, with sheriff receiving 500 per day for feeding prisoners and no extra allowance. Some cuts are voluntary but fixed by statute for auditor and commissioner.
Randi Lerohl a 48 year old Superior Wisconsin scrubwoman abandoned her 2100 mile Mississippi River voyage in a flat bottomed rowboat near Cairo after having traveled over half the distance. Advisors said the remainder would be more hazardous and she may proceed to New Orleans by steamer.
W. R. Carmichael mathematics teacher at Stephen F. Austin High School and basketball coach is reported in good condition after an appendectomy Tuesday. He had returned to Bryan after the holidays to resume work but was suddenly stricken and operated on.
Austin reports a tentative schedule shows highway jobs totaling 920000 to be let at the commission meeting on January 18. Projects include 1985 miles of grading and drainage structures 71 miles of base and surface work and 18 miles of jetting and ponding. It marks the first time in years no concrete work will be let.
Chief Martin of the Bryan police, in service for about 20 years, remained in critical condition at Wilkerson Memorial Clinic after suffering three hemorrhages this week. A blood transfusion was performed by his son Clifford, with the outcome still uncertain as of the morning report. He had shown some rally earlier, but his condition remained precarious.
Gov Sterling Gen Wolters and Adjutant General Bill Sterling defend an injunction suit by Constantin and Wrather arguing the restriction aimed to prevent riot. Judges Hutcheson and Bryant say Sterling’s claim is a subterfuge. A three judge court prosecutes the case.
Chairman Juett Shouse of the Democratic national committee announced the election of William N. Rogers, a wet Democrat, from New Hampshire’s first district yesterday, raising dissatisfaction with the Hoover administration. Rogers defeated John H. Barrett, a Republican, and will be the state’s only Democratic congressman.
