Sweeney recovers from an operation and hopes to return home soon. Visitors for New Year’s Day included Mr. and Mrs. J H Wright of Houston. Nalle Colson of Iola and Mrs. Colson visit Bryan. she will return Thursday to tend her grandmother. Preston Goen of Hemphill, Sabine County agent, returns from a Christmas visit, noting Goen’s Brazos County roots.
The Volkswille said Stalin allowed Trotsky to go to a health resort but now reports Trotsky remains at Alma Ata, gradually declining from malaria without medical aid or proper nourishment.
Tyler Haswell chosen presidential elector for his district left Bryan at about 5 am to join Texas electors at the capitol in Austin to cast the state vote for Herbert Hoover. Traditionally an elector carried the result to Washington but the law now uses mails for this purpose.
A spark from an illuminated Christmas tree caused a fatal blaze in a private dormitory at Oregon Normal School in Monmouth. Three students died Evelyn Ohman Florence Graham and Margaret Hemmers. Six others escaped by leaping from a second story porch. The fire occurred on January 2 withAssociated Press reporting.
Two Baylor Medical College students James Martin aged 28 of Itasca and Samuel Scott aged 23 of San Antonio were found dead in the burned rooming house. Searchers recovered the bodies after the pair failed to report for classes, triggering the rescue and ruin search.
Judge J. M. Melson of Sulphur Springs, attorney for Texas bus lines, visited Bryan to discuss proposed legislation before the 41st Legislature. He met with Senator Chas. S. Gainer and Hon W. S. Barron, presenting figures on the Texas bus fleet and equipment values.
The Extension Service Club will meet Thursday at 3 PM at Mrs. S D Hugheson home on College Road. The annual election of officers is the main item on the agenda with President Mrs M R Bentley urging full attendance.
The Bryan Buick Company moved into its new home on 26th street just east of the city fire station last night. Jack Allen says the extra space will allow a better car display and lead to a smoother operation in a few days.
Janie Graham aged 85 died of injuries from an automobile collision on Monday in Houston. The body will be sent to Greenville.
Mrs. W. A. Loving of Waéo arrived in Bryan to be with her aged mother Mrs. C. E. Jowers who has been critically ill for two weeks at the home of her daughter Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Higgs on north Tabor avenue. Mrs. Jowers, 83, has had influenza and pneumonia but shows some improvement this morning, a hopeful sign to friends.
Mrs J S Burtis aged 93 died in Dallas at 9 o clock after a brief illness with flu. Born June 10 1835 she will be buried beside her husband J S Burtis in Madisonville on Thursday at 3 pm. Survived by three daughters including Mrs John H Allen and three sons with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Relatives from Bryan will attend.
The Census Bureau preliminary report shows Texas cotton ginned in 1928 rose to 4,549,651 bales, up 577,017 from 1927’s 3,972,633 bales. The increase reflects strong production activity across the state as reported by the Department of Commerce.
College students depart Bryan by train and auto to continue studies in Austin and other cities for the year. Despite flu and colds the holiday mood stays bright as they return to duties. a large group heads to the State University in Austin including Kate Parker and many others.
A motorbus carrying sixteen people from Oklahoma City to El Reno, Oklahoma, crashed into a concrete bridge today. Sixteen were injured, five seriously, when one side of the bus was crushed as it collided with the structure during the trip.
Bryan plans to invite the Texas City Attorneys Association to hold its next annual meeting in Bryan. City Attorney F L Henderson will deliver the invitation at the Austin convention with city manager J Bryan Miller. Henderson and Miller may not attend all sessions due to travel Friday. Former Bryan city manager E E Adams, now in Waco, is on the program. Adams chairs the Waco post and McAdams, League of Texas Municipalities vice president, will discuss proposed league legislation for the 41st legislature.
Mr and Mrs C R Gardner and their family return from a holiday car trip covering over 1500 miles. They describe nearly flawless grade gravel and concrete highways after leaving Hempstead. The visit coincides with excitement over the capture and lynching of Charley Shepherd in Mississippi. Ray Gardner, 18, enjoyed time at the Hood home near Frierspoint and has ties to Hood's Brigade through Boy Scouts days in Bryan.
Weather report notes Bryan cooled to 27 degrees last night with a further drop of 5 degrees to a low of 27. By noon today the thermometer hovered near freezing as records from the countryside suggest colder conditions due to unbroken winds and fewer heated buildings.
J M Ferguson county tax collector reports 2,186 automobile licenses issued so far this morning as year end crowds swell the office. Many applicants who postponed before January 1 seek licenses during the last days of 1928 and this morning.
Detroit Jan 2 Crowds estimated at 32 000 formed outside Fordson employment office in snow after Ford announced 30 000 more workers to be hired Officials said 500 to 600 men would be added to the plant roster daily until the total reached 30 000 The event marks a large expansion of Ford plants with thousands awaiting entry and news crews on hand
Hon. W. S. Barron of Brazos County, ill with flu, is convalescing and expected to reach Austin by Thursday or Friday to join Speaker headquarters at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel. Rep. Ray Holder of Lancaster now heads Barron operations. Barron’s camp reports a landslide in pledges and broad support for his election as speaker, adding to his long service in the 39th and 40th Legislatures.
The Bryan Woman's Club held its first January meeting at Carnegie Library with President Mrs Ty ler Haswell presiding and strong attendance. The official election of 1929 30 officers will be announced tomorrow.
John D. Rogers of Nava Sota Texas ships 1250 bushels of Acala state certified cotton seed to China on the last day of 1928 for planting. Rogers, a noted cotton seed breeder and president of the Texas Cotton Seed Crushers Association, had earlier sent seed to China for government experiments and once received a 5000 bushel order but could only supply 1250.
Lord Beaverbrook owner of the Daily Express and Evening Standard in London has decided to give away 25000 pounds as a thank offering for his escape from a motor accident last Friday. The funds will be distributed to various persons and objects in gratitude for good fortune.
Wade Wilborne of Titus county had his death sentence affirmed by the Court of Criminal Appeals for murdering his wife Rosa last February. The ruling upholds the death penalty in a case that hinged on pretrial and trial proceedings and the evidence presented at the original trial in Austin.
Chicago January 2 Inter national Harvester Company announced a million dollar a year vacation benefit for its 40 000 employees Two weeks vacation with pay will be extended to craftsmen in all manufacturing departments as well as to office help and there will be time off allowances in emergency cases In addition to the two weeks vacation every employee will be credited with a six day time off allowance to be used for any purpose The vacation with pay arrangement officials said is not a general thing among large manufacturers.
Senator Earle B. Mayfield arrived in Washington from Texas to stay for the current Congress and said he would not discuss delaying action on former Governor Pat M. Neff of Waco for a seat on the United States Railroad Board of Mediation. He had not spoken with Interstate Commerce Committee members since his arrival and had no information on a possible hearing date.
San Antonio couple Mr and Mrs R M McFarlin announce through manager R O Hollerson that they will fund a 200000 building at Tulsa university, increasing their Texas and Oklahoma education gifts to 1600000. They also completed a 50000 Wesleyan institute building and pledged 600000 for an Oklahoma church, 600000 for a Southern Methodist university auditorium, and 150000 for Westmoreland hall in San Antonio.
Bryan city schools opened on time with good attendance as many homes faced illness during the holidays. Superintendent Harry L. Durham notes most teachers returned. one, Miss Moran, is ill with flu but expected back Monday, Jan. 7. Twenty five new students enrolled at East Side school.

In Marshall Missouri Blaine Tuxhorn and co pilot Ronard Rhiner launch an air refueling endurance bid in a snow covered field at five degrees above zero.
In Los Angeles on January 2, Miss Bobby Trout aged 18 took to the air in a Sports monoplane to challenge the women's endurance flight record, continuing a high profile effort in aviation.
