Judge John Watson Announces Candidacy for District Judge

Judge John Watson of Cameron declares his candidacy for district judge of the twentieth judicial district covering Milam Robertson and Brazos counties. A Milam County judge since 1896 and former Hefley McBride associate, he emphasizes honesty and capable, impartial law administration. He will address voters in the area ahead of the July 22 Democratic primaries.

Bryan deputy marshal awarded Carnegie Hero Medal and prize

A. E. Worley of Bryan received a 1000 check from the Carnegie Hero Commission in New York City for rescuing flood sufferers in the Brazos bottoms during the 1913 overflow. Henry Berger and Albert May also earned hero medals and 1000 each. The funds will aid Worley’s home payment per the commission agreement.

Four-Year Garden Course For Girls

The U S Department of Agriculture outlines a four year progressive garden and canning program for Southern girls. Start with tomatoes and tenth acre plots, then add crops, winter gardens, and finally perennial fruits. By end of junior year many will have permanent gardens with fruit and vegetable crops.

Mexia Opera House Gas Blast Kills Nine

A gas explosion and subsequent fire leveled the Mexia old opera house on February 16, killing nine with others missing or injured. The collapse occurred during an art exhibit setup, with extensive property damage estimated at $100,000 as rescue crews worked through the ruins.

Revivalist Ham Struck by Local Bar Member in Hotel Lobby

Revivalist Ham leading Nueces County prohibition efforts was struck by R. B. Russell in the Nueces hotel lobby Thursday afternoon after Ham refused to explain or retract remarks from a public address. Russell allegedly struck Ham with a quirt several times. Ham defended himself and deputies separated them. Affray charges filed against Russell.

The district court enters a March 6 term with District Clerk Barron and Sheriff Nunn leading filings and service. Expect heavy civil business and a light criminal docket as the term begins.

Death of infant son of Mr and Mrs Blackwell

Sympathy pours in for Mr and Mrs H F Blackwell after the 8 months old child dies at the home of Mr C G Parsons. The baby was ill briefly and the funeral is set for Saturday at 3 30 in Cit Cemetery with interment at the city cemetery.
