The People's Column reports Bryan's first Dollar Bargain Day faced poor weather and impassable roads but drew wide interest. Merchants and the public hope for a redo, calling Bargain Days a valuable city asset despite disappointments.
Otto Gent of Mexia, an Internal Revenue Department representative, will be in Bryan on Tuesday February 28 at the Chamber of Commerce rooms to assist citizens with income tax returns at no cost to taxpayers. Mrs Bertha M Renfro of San Antonio district deputy of the Womens Benefit Association will visit Bryan to inspect the Bryan Review W B A and its work. W E Johnson of Bryan has returned from Houston after attending Kelvinator Electric Refrigerator Factory service school.
February brings rain and spring warmth urging Bryan homeowners to plant more flowers shrubs and trees to beautify the city. Bryan claims the crepe myrtle city title and more crepe myrtles are urged now. Planting time is near with Franklin’s saying that time will not wait and home grounds should feature flower bordered lawns and climbing roses for shade and adornment. Plant more flowers in Bryan this February and March than before.
Friends of Bryan Assembly No 41 Rainbow for Girls will exemplify their initiation before visiting Eastern Star members at a school of instruction in Bryan on March 5. Only Masons Eastern Stars and Rainbow initiates may witness the work. The local Rainbow Assembly officers led by Mother Advisor Mrs M R Bentley have trained to a high standard and will welcome Bryan Masons and Eastern Stars while demonstrating their ritualistic service.
C. H. Smith, 54, general manager of Westinghouse Union Battery Co., fell from a third floor window of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association building and was killed instantly today.
Dispatches from Canton say 1700 alleged Communists were executed by Canton troops after the capture of East City on February 20. The Cantonese also captured 600 members of the Girls' Communist Corps in the same area, who were not executed. North of Canton 809 Reds were captured along with hundreds of rifles.
Washington Feb 22. Harry Sinclair and co defendants in the oil contempt case face lengthy delays as two court paths open. They may appeal to higher tribunals beyond Justice Siddons District of Columbia Court which sentenced Sinclair W M Burns Henry Mason Day and Sherman Burns yesterday.
WBA designates March 2 for a special rally meeting in Bryan with Hearne Review joining. Guest speakers include Alberta Droelle of Port Huron Michigan supervising vice president WBA Sadie Botsler of Dallas State Seal Director Bertha Renfro of San Antonio district deputy, plus Syble Haltom of Bryan Review No 120 and staff planning a program of notable interest.
Bryan recorded a two inch rainfall yesterday afternoon and last night marking a heavy winter downpour. Engineer J E Blair reports little road damage despite the downpour. Monday rainfall was .63 inches, totaling 2.63 inches for the period.
In Eastland on February 22 juror selection for the Henry Helms robbery of the Cisco First National Bank continued, with ten jurors chosen after adding three more. The case centers on the bank heist and the defendant’s fate will hinge on the jury verdict.
Seniors in military science begin a new course on United States wars, first covering the Hittite War with illustrated slides. Major C. L. Stevenson Major J. E. Sloan and Major E. Bertram will lead lectures in Assembly Hall with visitors allowed, 10:00 a.m. daily and 9:00 a.m. Tuesdays Thursdays Saturdays. Week schedule lists Introduction, Hittite War, and Revolutionary War.
Mrs. Maggie Sims of Mineral Wells died Monday night February 20 in Mineral Wells after ten months illness. She was born in 1861 in Mississippi and was 67. Survived by daughter Mrs. A. N. Brown and two sisters Mrs. J. R. Sims and Mrs. Fanny Chatham. Funeral held Tuesday at 8 PM at the Brown home with interment in City Cemetery.
Dr Lewis Brownes former rabbi and author of This Believing World will lecture March 27 at 8:00 p m in Assembly Hall. Speaking on Whats Happening to Religion he discusses his study of world faiths and the rise of new religious thought.
The Bryan Lions Club featured J A Clutter of A and M College discussing U S milk output of 120000000000 pounds. Music by Miss Mildred Salley and Miss Kathleen Cason complemented the program while Bob Irvine received a formal welcome. Reports by Sam Eberstadt and J Bryan Miller highlighted visits and plans including a push for the 1929 State convention in Bryan.
A two story house fire in Pittsburgh killed the father Konstance Kozakeiwicz 45 and his four children Steven 19 Phillip 15 Mildred 11 and Stanley 7. Ten others were rescued by firemen as the blaze destroyed the home.
In Denison suit against Municipal Gas Co. the Texas Superior Court upheld the 1919 oil and gas conservation act granting the State Railroad Commission authority to regulate gas rates. The ruling affirms state power over municipal gas pricing and conservation aims.
Major E. A. Lightfoot director of the Allen Academy band is returning to Bryan from Breckenridge where he attended the State Band Teachers Association meeting of which he is secretary. He travels with R. J. Dunn director of the A and M College band. Lightfoot is a former president and has helped build the organization.
Reverend Bob Self a renowned Southern revivalist will hold a revival at Bryan Free Baptist Church starting April 1 per Harry S&S. Self recently led a highly successful revival in Asheville North Carolina and the church calls the visit a great fortune for the community.
Lt. Gov. Iller says the only sure method to end pink boll worm infestation is to stop cotton production in affected districts for three years. He cites the British Empire starve out method used in Egypt as a warning.
W. E. Farmer, long time head of the Western Public Service Company in Bryan, will be moved March 1 to lead the commercial department of the Huntsville office. Victor Gayle, a Bryan native and A and M College graduate, will succeed him and is described as Farmer’s protégé.
AUSTIN Feb 22 Representative Ruben Loftin of Henrietta said he will seek re election to the Legislature and plans a bill to overhaul state highway statutes. He proposes creating five to seven highway districts, enlarging the highway commission and making members elective, plus licensing drivers and revoking permits from reckless operators to cut accidents. Loftin favors Cecil Storey for speaker but would back W S Barron if Storey does not run.
The Bryan Cemetery Association holds its annual meeting Thursday Feb 23 at 10 30 a m in the Carnegie library auditorium. Election of officers and other important business on the agenda. President Geo A Adams urges full attendance and invites all members.
About 500 bankers from the seventh district of the Bankers' Association of Texas gathered in Wichita Falls as the annual convention opened led by J. C. Anderson of Plainview as chairman.

Philadelphia February 22 Andrew Mellon secretary of the treasury Governor Fisher of Pennsylvania and Frank Noyes of the Associated Press received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees at the University of Pennsylvania during Washington birthday exercises.
Miss Lily Bess Kyle will wed soon in Guion Hall at A and M College becoming the second girl to marry in a state college building. Major L L McInnis recalls that in 1878 or 1879 Miss Fannie Lewis daughter of General L L Lewis was married in the chapel on the fourth floor of the old main building.
Texarkana report says Rev. Thomas Pearson Pentecostal evangelist is held on temporary bond as Rev. C. H. Simms Pentecostal pastor remains wounded from a knife attack at the church last night. Simms suffered knife wounds. Pearson was in custody awaiting outcome of injuries.
The state files a suit in Wheeler and Gray counties seeking title to numerous acres of the Red River bed oil lands. The Attorney General's department targets 192 defendants including major oil companies. The suit asks for a surveyor report and $100000 in cash damages, arguing river bed lands belong to the state as navigable waters.
Emma Jean Spell, four, granddaughter of Mrs. Emma Spell, enjoyed a birthday party at home and a Sunday School celebration at First Methodist. Neighbor Mrs. A. K. Brown baked a large angel food cake with four candles for four birthday wishes.
The U S Department of Agriculture seeks a 400000 fund to combat the pink bollworm in West Texas with 200000 immediately available and 200000 later at the President's order. Representative Buchanan pushed for higher immediate access as seven counties report 400000 acres at risk. Arkansas Plant Board warned the infestation could threaten the South via seed shipments.
Representative W. S. Barren of Bryan campaigned in Austin and across Texas on Tuesday in support of his bid to become speaker. He said he is receiving pledges from legislators statewide.
Heavy upstream rains will push the Brazos River to rise sharply within 36 hours reaching Valley Junction and continuing for days. Flooding will be limited unless additional heavy rain occurs, with Dainger field noted in the alert.

A defense motion for a change of venue in the ouster suit against L. J. Woods, county attorney, was granted by Judge Hawkins Scarborough and the case ordered transferred to Waxahachie, Ellis County. The motion to disqualify the court was overruled after examining witnesses including the court and the defendant.
A heavy downpour did not deter a large Wesley Brotherhood audience at the Methodist church Tuesday night. Hon. Tyler Haswell, Rev. R. S. Marshall, and Miss Lelia Law Davis spoke, with music by Robert Irvine, Miss Rose Marie Graham, Miss Kathleen Cason, and Miss Mildred Salley. A piano solo opened the program and a duet by Miss Salley and Miss Cason received hearty applause.
