The Italians in America A study of roots and aims

In this essay the Italian immigrant is placed in context from northern to southern origins. It notes Piedmont and Lombardy as fertile, industrial regions with literacy advantage, and southern Italy as rural, unstable, priest–dominated, shaping emigration patterns to the United States. It discusses Sicily and Norman influence, language variety, and the blend of Catholic heritage with patriotic impulses among Italians.
