In Austin the House voted 104 to 29 to urge a constitutional amendment and election on raising the governor’s salary from 4600 to 10000 dollars a year. The July 16 vote would precede a high-stakes debate with rivals arguing over adequacy and equity of pay.
A Texas bill proposed by Rep. C. H. Jenkins would shift constitutional amendment power from voters to the legislature. The plan would require a majority in one session and a two thirds vote in the next, making amendments an election issue for lawmakers.

She credited longevity to a diet of black bread and sugar eating two and a half pounds of bread and a pound of sugar daily. She said she never was sick until her final illness.
Sybil Sullivan an eight year old girl died in Marshall after her clothing caught fire from a gas heater at her home earlier today. The tragedy adds another fatal burn case to the city records and authorities investigated the incident.
Col. Charles Lindbergh completed the first leg of his inaugural air mail flight to Panama by landing at Punta Arenas in Costa Rica. One hour and twenty minutes later he took off for Panama City on the last lap toward the goal.

Mrs Suzanne King Bruwaert widow of Edmond Bruwaert former French Consul in Chicago left a 2 million dollar home for spinisters over 60. Bruwaert died in Utica New York November 10 aged 80. Sister Mrs William Barry brought her from Lausanne Switzerland before death.
At the Rice Hotel on February 6 the A and M College board re elected all officers for the two day reorganization session led by F M Law. Officers include Law as president, Byrd E White as vice president, and S S G Bailey as secretary. The board plans a new library building costing 225000 with 25000 for furnishings and will visit Prairie View Normal and Industrial College Thursday.
Shipment of street lighting equipment arrives to extend the city White Way. Installations planned on 25th Street between Parker and Washington and on Main Street between 22nd and 26th Street. Equipment matches that used on Main Street and Bryan Avenue and will be set as material arrives.
NACOGDOCHES Feb 6 Twelve inmates of the county jail attempted an escape by setting bedding afire in a corner of the jail. The sheriff was not available to unlock the jail and firemen could not enter due to blocked windows. Firefighters fought the blaze for a half hour as prisoners were overcome by smoke. After Sheriff Turner arrived the escapees were corralled into water soaked cells and smoke filled chambers.
A large strike riot in Colombo leaves four dead sixty in hospital and about three thousand injured. The violence began with 15,000 harbor and railway workers marching on police headquarters and subsiding only overnight. In Bombay India troops fired on rioting Muslims killing three and wounding six amid days of unrest.
Austin February 6 Harry Leahy of Mathis lost his motion for a rehearing before the court of criminal appeals and unless Governor Moody intervenes will die in the electric chair for the murder of Dr J A Ramsey. Leahy was convicted by a Williamson county jury after refusing a sentence of fifty years at his first Live Oak county trial.
In the early hours Wednesday the elm in front of Bryan city hall was cut down by unknown axmen. Police say the stump remains four feet high while volunteers salvage the trunk. Officials cite traffic danger and recall a bygone era of paying taxes at the city hall.
Jackson Davis of Richmond Va called the late Dr Seaman A Knapp our greatest agricultural statesman in an address prepared for delivery before the Association of Southern Agricultural Workers at a big meet in Houston. The speaker credited Knapp with introducing farm demonstration work and shaping the educational revival of the South and nationwide extension service for rural life through state agricultural colleges.
