HANGING OF THIRTEEN FOR HOUSTON RIOT IN 1917

In San Antonio, December 11, thirteen soldiers were hanged at 7 17 this morning for participation in the Houston riot of August 23. The executed included Sergeant Nesbitt and Corporals Brown Wheatley Moore Baltimore Davis Divina Johnson Young MacHerter. Of sixty three tried, forty one got life, one discharged, two and a half years confinement, three dishonorably discharged, five acquitted.

London December 12 Vienna official statement says the Austrian battleship Wein was torpedoed and sunk Sunday night. Most of the crew were saved. The Wein had a complement of 441 men.

Cotton market swings after government report causes gains then losses

The cotton market rose strongly yesterday on the government report but collapsed today. Futures fell 43 points from yesterday, Houston spots lost 40 points, and local spots traded at 28 cents in middling basis. Cottonseed was quoted at 68 dollars per ton.

Berry Named Twelfth District Judge In Texas

Governor Hobby appointed E. A. Berry of Madisonville as district judge of the Twelfth Judicial District to fill the vacancy from S. W. Deans resignation. The district includes Madison, Leon, Walker, Grimes and Trinity counties. Dean will likely move to Navasota to join H. L. Lewis in private practice. Berry, a Madisonville attorney and former district attorney, is a Bryan State University alumnus.

London December 12 Andrew Bonar Law chancellor of the exchequer presented a vote of credit in the house of commons. He said the expenditure would cover through March 1918 and reported an average daily outlay of 6,794,000 pounds in the last sixty three days and 6,686,000 pounds since the end of the previous financial year.

Large crowd sees meet with State Highway commission in Benchley

A commercial club committee secured about fifty cars for a trip to Benchley to meet the State Highway commission. Nearly one hundred people joined the excursion from the Roberson county crowd. They left the Commercial Club corner at 3 30 for Benchley where the commissioners would be turned over by locals. A banquet at Hotel Bryan was planned for 50 to 60 guests, with over fifty banquet tickets sold by noon. Late word that the highway commission was two hours late meant only pilot cars went to Benchley.

Beet Sugar Prices Rise 10 Cents a Hundred Pounds

Washington reports the food administration authorized a 10 cent raise per hundred pounds in wholesale beet sugar to align with Cuban cane sugar prices. The change targets basic centers New York San Francisco and New Orleans at 7.35 dollars and should not raise retail prices. A further small increase may follow after Cuban freight rates adjust, likely next week.

Walter Parker Dies of Measles and Pneumonia

Walter Parker aged 28 of Steep Hollow died Thursday afternoon at 5 45 due to complications from measles and pneumonia after serving with the army. He enlisted in Houston and served at Camp Bowie Fort Worth before returning home on furlough. Born January 13 1892 in Brazos County he is survived by his parents two sisters and a brother. Funeral will be Thursday at 11 at Alexander.

War Emergency Men for Drouth Section

Thirty special agents have been appointed by the extension service of A and M college to work in the drouth stricken sections of Texas and assist the farmers in purchasing feed and handling livestock. The service cooperates with the national bureau of markets and the state warehouse and marketing commission to disseminate information on the market for feedstuffs. This is war emergency work to provide farmers a sufficient feed supply for their stock to sustain next year’s crop and move cattle to grass.
