German forces cut through the Russian siege near Lodz after costly bayonet fighting lasting thirty six hours. Ninety percent of German officers were reported killed as Russians counterattacked to block their escape.
Citizens urged a mass meeting at the Commercial Club to inform voters about the bond issue and related costs. A two person committee was chosen to handle publicity as the December 30 election approaches.
Washington announces a coordinated plan to minimize delays in shipping cotton from American ports to European belligerents. The British agree and the French pledge approval, with captains receiving a consular shipment statement to show to Allied cruisers on the high seas.
The passage notes that people as a whole do not want good roads at this time and that no one wished to push the issue. It states the campaign will proceed as outlined and that any helpful suggestions will be welcomed by the committee.
The sixth cotton ginning report of the season shows 13,066,105 bales ginned prior to December 1 1914, compared with 12,088,412 last year and 12,816,807 in 1911. Sea island cotton totaled 62,991 bales. State tallies list Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and others with ginnings ranging up to 1,438,389 bales in Alabama and 1,200,867 in South Carolina.
Washington reports estimates for this year include two battleships and eight or more submarines as part of the administration program. Total army and navy estimates reach 256,421,357 dollars, up 5,000,000 from last year.
Geneva reports Bucharest dispatch saying Roumania has decided to enter the war on the side of the Allies. Swiss and British tensions touch air sovereignty. A long destroyed monastery near Lodz is reported by Havas as ruined with casualties.
The Verda, a gasoline laden steamer from Port Arthur Texas, exploded in a gale near Point Barrow England. Fourteen crew members died and only two were saved. The incident was reported by Associated Press from London on December 8.
Washington dispatches say Mexico is quiet orderly and well policed with few political arrests made as of December 8.
A roaring northeaster at sixty miles per hour hit the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to Maine. An unknown four funnel warship with a fighting top ran ashore off Ocean City Maryland as fog hid its identity. The storm flooded Seabright New Jersey streets and battered the seawall while New York harbor shipping was cleared. no casualties reported.

An official bulletin says Allied forces keep attacking the remaining German trenches on the left bank of the Yser. In Champagne French heavy artillery continues to outshoot German guns as the fighting persists.
President Wilson opposed Representative Gardner's plan for a defense preparedness investigation. He favored a Congressional committee to conduct a full inquiry and gather all facts without creating unfavorable impressions.
President Wilson told Congress the United States needs a strong navy but will not turn the country into a military camp. He said the nation has not neglected defenses and criticized misinformation while endorsing increases to the National Guard.
J. E. C. Sanders departed for San Antonio today to join his wife and establish a confectionery business there. He resigns from Sanders Brothers and leaves Bryan, with friends extending best wishes for their future home and endeavors.
