Basis of Rental For Cotton Land Has Been Raised

A telegram from cotton production administrator C A Cobb says rental calculations for land retired from cotton will use 3.5 cents per pound instead of 3 cents. Acreage reduction will range from 25 to 45 percent, not 40. Rental cap remains 18 dollars per acre, with example showing 500 pounds yields about 15 dollars rental.

Santa Claus may speed up Bryan visit

Santa Claus may arrive in Bryan Friday afternoon December 15 if his itinerary allows. A public distribution of Christmas presents will run from 1 to 5 pm with many local firms aiding. Henry Locke's German band plays on Main and Bryan streets and a big parade forms at 8 pm with 89 Bryan and College firms entered and more expected.

Brazos County Negroes Acquitted Of Burglary

Sam Hoyle and Willie Lee were acquitted in Robertson county district court of burglary charge for a July 31 box car burglary at Valley Junction on the Missouri Pacific tracks. Trial in Franklin featured attorney Lamar Bethea for the defendants and County Attorney John Grace for the state.

Service Station Robbed of Cash on College Avenue

Two young men robbed the Magnolia service station operated by A Murray on College avenue and List street at about 0 30 Monday evening. They forced E J McBride to open the cash register and escaped with about $55. Police spread, pursuing toward Hearne, but the suspects fled on foot and the stolen car was held in Hearne.

Paris reports a dim outlook for France's cotton textile industry, France being the third largest European buyer of U S cotton. A Texas A&M group visiting Paris found distractions from sightseeing but remained focused on the cotton trail, continuing toward the end of the journey.

City Work Rules Favor Direct Relief Applicants

Daily crowds at the city warehouse and City Hall show the push to place those on direct relief first under Civil Works Administration rules. The county lists 429 eligible CWA workers, with about 200 more jobs expected on a 30 hour week at 40 cents an hour once the cannery opens, plus county projects and expanded street work to spread employment.

Bryan high officials announce a Thursday 5 PM game at Forrest Field between the Stephen F. Austin Broncos and the Caldwell Hornets. The prior week ended scoreless as neither team crossed midfields. If weather allows, the Hornets visit for gate receipts aiding lettermen awards.

A black cat climbed a city light pole on Duncan street near College road and kept neighbors awake. WwW. J. Frenchy Landry, Bryan fireman and former line man, ascended the pole early Tuesday to rescue the feline stranded at the top.

James R. Cummings, 31, of the Austin motorcycle police squad, died in a Monday crash with a car carrying two occupants. He was the second motorcycle officer to die in the area in recent weeks.

Denton Church of Christ Begins Sermon Series by Milholland

Thomas A. Milholland of Denton preached Monday evening at 7 15 to open a series of sermons in the new meeting house at 29th street and Washington avenue. The Denton church has 600 members with about 250 others from North Texas State Teachers College and College of Industrial Arts. Milholland will speak twice daily at 3 30 and 7 30, and the public is invited.

Brazos County Sanitation Campaign Expands

Fifty more men join the Brazos sanitation drive under Emmett Trant as 20 carpenters and 30 laborers start work funded by C W A. They will build pit toilets at rural schools and churches across the county, with two demonstrations at the county poor farm. Workers earn 40 cents an hour for 30 hours weekly. interested residents must join the C W A register.

Formation of Texas Cooperatives Inc a statewide agency capitalized at 1 000 000 to handle the consolidated business interests of the state's cooperative farm organizations was approved unanimously today at a meeting of 500 Texas farmers and cattlemen. Payroll Approved For County Work Relief In Texas

County officials in Bryan and Brazos seek Civil Works funds to employ 429 people with a projected $5,000 weekly payroll. Projects include graveling rural roads and a bridge road in Jones area. Bob Williams reports likely approval for county roads and Burleson link, plus hiring extra trucks for city graveling work. A sewing project for 18 local women received approval, with donated machines to produce clothing for the cannery and workers.

Gas Tax To Be Lowered January First

Federal gasoline tax will drop 1 to 2 cents per gallon starting January 1, per American Automobile Association. The extra half-cent levy was added last June to finance public works under the NIRA, costing motorists about 70 million dollars yearly. AAA hopes removal will lead to repeal of other motor vehicle levies by the federal government. The tax removal was tied to balancing the national budget or repeal of the 18th amendment.

Bryan Lions Set Matty Bell Day and Recreation Center Talk

At the Bryan Lions Club regular meeting the plan was announced to honor Lion Madison Bell with a Matty Bell Day next Tuesday noon. Discussion also covered Bryan’s possible purchase of the present country club to convert it into a municipal recreation center with participation by members.
