Short Cotton Crop Boosts Brazos County Farmer Outlook
Brazos County faces a very short cotton crop this year says Jd. Webb Howell founder of the Bryan cotton seed oil mill in its 23rd season. He predicts hulls will rise in price as South Texas supplies dwindle and the local mill may import hulls before December. Meal prices should hold near last year and cotton seed oil may drop due to large carryovers. He notes demand for linters is weak and foresees a long-term shift away from all-cotton farming. The mill will run 12 hours daily to conserve the crop.
