July Accidents Record Highs in Texas for 1919

Austin reports July 1919 saw 4304 accidents, the highest since September 1918, with 33 fatal accidents and 2511 claims filed. Total paid insurance reached 93622 dollars as the Texas Industrial Accident board logged figures and a record year so far. Governor Hobby Seeks Details On Colored People Beating Case

Austin August 23. Governor Hobby received a telegram from a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People official about a beating yesterday and a demand for punishment of J R Shillady, secretary of the association. Hobby did not disclose the message contents. New York reports said the association wired him seeking action against Shillady's assailants. Shillady, the only offender mentioned, was punished before your injury came.

New Wilmington Pa August 26 The city of Jerusalem was surrendered to the British by a Yankee photographer acting for the Arab mayor After weeks of bombardment Turks agreed to quit The photographer rode with the mayor to British forces and a sentry led the way to General Allenby two days later he entered Jerusalem and the surrender was announced

Automobile owning causes fire losses say state officer

Austin Tex August 27 State Fire Marshal Wallace Inglish warns that more farmers will buy autos trucks and tractors with 1919 crop proceeds and store gasoline and oils in barns creating higher rural fire losses. He estimates 1918 rural fire losses at about 4 million dollars and says most were from carelessness. Inglish predicts fire hazards on about half of farms under new motor vehicle ownership.

Army needs many officers during reorganization

Secretary Baker urged Congress to authorize keeping up to eighteen thousand commissioned officers until June 30, 1920 to allow line officers to focus on reorganizing the army. He cited reducing the permanent force and liquidating six and a half billion dollars in property as the department's two main tasks.
