About Bryan M F Vitopil a prominent local merchant and Chamber of Commerce director was surprised by friends Sunday with a royal dinner and many gifts to mark his fiftieth birthday. Other notes mention Mrs M Schulman returning from visits in New York City and the East and several Bryan residents vacationing in Santa Fe Kerrville Camp Mystic Arkansas and nearby areas.
The item reports Rev E H Tirey of First Baptist Temple writing from Boulder Colo that he will stay several weeks for health. Pat Neff sends postcard from Boston with Minutemen Memorial inscription. Mrs Jno E Astin writes from Versailles France describing trips and fountains cost of 500 dollars for half hour on Sundays.
Hon. John A. Erhard district governor of Lionism in Texas gave an inspirational talk at the Bryan Lions Club on love and friendship. The event, led by E. R. Bryant, featured A. D. Whisenant of Abilene who sang several solos and recalled the wedding of Gov. Dan Moody in Abilene.
Station WTAW features a College radio program on Thursday noon with Farm Talk and Soprano Solos. Miss Mildred Salley performs as soprano soloist and the broadcast covers 483.6 metres and 620 kilocycles.
The Allen Academy selects Walter S. Hicks of Georgia to head the English Department for the new year. He holds AB from Michigan and MA from Tulane, with prior posts at Sewanee Military Academy and Gordon Institute. Hicks also ran a boys summer camp at Pinecliffe Colorado, and the appointment maintains a 12 to 1 student teacher ratio.
Henry Clay Sawyer of San Angelo has accepted the night clerk position at the LaSalle Hotel per manager Dupree Fountain. A 22 year old hotel veteran, Sawyer entered the field at 16 and has worked at Naylor Hotel San Angelo O Neill Hotel Palestine Bender Hotel Houston Auditorium Hotel Houston and Lamar Hotel Houston.
The second Democratic primary will be held Saturday in Texas with Brazos county locals eyeing three races. County commissioner pits John M. Moore against C A Buchanan, tax assessor features Clyde Goen versus Marshall Peters, and U S Senator race has Earle B Mayfield seeking a second term against Tom Connally of Marlin who has served in Congress for 12 years. Bryan voters are seen as pivotal in the results.
Storms across the Davis Strait hindered rescuers seeking Bert Hassell and Parker Cramer, the Rockford to Stockholm flyers reported missing as of August 22 in Chicago.

An 18 year old girl Ada Hyde died after leaping from a third story window during a Salt Lake City apartment fire. At least five others were injured, one possibly fatally, as bystanders placed a blanket to break her fall.
Bryan Stars to play for Allen Academy this fall as director Wilson calls all prospects to report on Monday September 17 for equipment and start of practice. Returning Bryan area players include Abe Barnett Bud McLeod Lawrence Ashburn Bill Staples Bill Manning Dudley Braun Duck Mallard Bill Eaves Bill Merka and Ralph Ball.
Due to the leave of absence of T. W. Leland and the departure of W. K. Sugaroff the Social Science Seminar leaders an extra election elected Major J. E. Sloan to president and Professor S. B. Morgan to secretary and treasurer for the next year at the A and M College seminar.
Bryan businessmen and officials from Bryan gathered in Carlos Grimes county on Tuesday to observe the oil well being drilled. The team cored into oil sand two weeks ago, halted work to prepare for bringing in, casings were set and cementing completed, and after a ten day setting period drilling will resume to test the well. Local interest runs high as the final drilling proceeds with the expectation of a true oil discovery.
Special to The Eagle reports that for Bryan and vicinity tonight and Thursday the weather will be generally fair with no significant precipitation expected and mild conditions overall.
Rev Joseph Dobes D D of Prague Czecho Slovakia will address the Methodist Church tonight at 8 00 o clock He has spent eight years in European missionary work and is a theology professor editor and district elder He will describe European conditions and his mission experiences he and his family once lived in Bryan and he is remembered by many in the church and community.
Dr. R L Thompson pathologist reports evidence of milk sickness in four Cabool Missouri victims who died within eight days this month after cows fed on snakeroot. The findings tie the fatalities to contaminated milk as the source.
Farmers in Brazos county are not holding their cotton but selling it at prevailing prices. Local observers say Brazos county cotton is better than in most nearby counties in this region.
Gabe Cazell arrived from San Antonio to join Mrs. Cazell and children visiting her mother Nannie Rohde and family. A noted Texas singer, he promotes community singing and was chosen to direct singing at the Texas Presidents and Secretaries Rotary Clubs meeting in Victoria. He led today’s Rotary luncheon and received an ovation.
Mr and Mrs Charles Hulbert Alvord announce the marriage of their daughter Mina Cooke Alvord to Jack Williams. The ceremony will be on Saturday September 1 at 7 30 p.m. at 429 Cleveland Court San Antonio. After September 5 the couple will reside in Itasca. Mina is a State University graduate formerly at home in College Station. Mr Alvord directed Extension Service.
In Phoenix on August 22 five people were electrocuted after stumbling onto a 2,300 volt power line blown down in a windstorm. Richard Miller his wife and son died instantly while Wesley Miller and neighbor Carl Meeks perished while trying to rescue them.
Public invited to Eagle Office Saturday night to hear second Democratic primary results for county and state races. Returns expected to start by 7 o clock and be in early except for state races.
Forty absentee votes have been polled in Brazos County with County Clerk A S McSwain for the second primary election set for Saturday. Thursday is the last day to poll by the absentee method.
John Pollock of Dallas, once driving an ox wagon to Bryan when Main Street was a mud puddle, is in Bryan visiting friends. He left the country in 1906 and formerly lived at Cook's Farm. He notes many changes and improvements and says he would need a cab driver to show him around Bryan.
In Dallas on August 22, Paul Shepherd and Sterling Pugh, both youths, remained unconscious eighty four hours after their automobile crash. Doctors said little hope existed for their recovery.
Mr V J Boriskie and Mrs Boriskie return from a ten day trip through West Texas and New Mexico. They praise a 200 acre Loving New Mexico cotton field of Acala variety yielding three bales per acre. They visited Carlsbad Cavern and enjoyed regional sights. On the way home they met Mr and Mrs D D Williamson in San Angelo.
Texas officials exclude names of black soldiers executed in the Houston race riot from a war dead list to be inscribed on a bronze tablet at Texas Memorial Stadium. Gov Moody leads panel which awarded a $9,500 contract. $10,000 appropriated. no clear count of affected soldiers.
Albany August 22 Gov Alfred E Smith will be notified that he is the Democratic presidential nominee on the east steps of the State capitol. His acceptance speech will outline stances on prohibition agriculture and foreign policy and include plans to modify the Volstead Act and the Eighteenth Amendment. A 114 nation radio hookup will broadcast the event worldwide.
The candidate calls for a businesslike federal reorganization, pledges steady tariff policy, supports public waterpower ownership, inland waterway development, conservation, and labor protections. He backs immigration controls, opposes returning the saloon, and commits to enforcing the 18th amendment while noting the President enforces laws. (Continued on page 4).
Graham Hunt of Cincinnati secured the Democratic nomination for the short term U.S. Senate seat vacated by Senator Willis. Secretary of State Brown declared the nomination with an official majority of 757 votes over Senator Locher of Cleveland in Columbus on August 22.
Brazos County Teachers Institute set for September 10 to 14 in the Physics building at A and M College. W. L. Hughes leads all sessions with county officers and specialists discussing health, clubs, score cards, and daily programs. The colored institute will be held in Navarro County, date to be announced.
Cotton futures fall five points while local spot prices ease from 18 1 4 to 18 1 2 cents per pound amid market adjustments influencing the textile trade.
The Department of Justice approved the acquisition of 2,400 acres for a primary flying field and aviation school near San Antonio Texas after 25 parcels were cleared. Congress authorized the purchase following local citizen funding of $625,000 to obtain the site, which lies eleven miles from San Antonio along a highway.
