Champion James J. Braddock will enter a hospital Thursday for an operation on a bone enlargement in his left hand. The Braddock Schmeling title bout scheduled for next month will not be fought this year, according to Braddock’s manager Joe Gould. Schmeling’s manager Joe Jacobs will seek clarification from the New York Boxing Commission.

SFA Band Starts Drills and Public Uniform List

Safe Blowers Frightened From Ice Co Office Robbery
Burglars entered the Stephan Ice and Bottling Company on East 24th Street through a skylight and attempted to blow the safe but fled when frightened. A small amount of cash was taken and dynamite found at the scene. A man arrested in Mexia is believed linked to the burglary and returned to the city with deputies.

NAVASOTA August 13. Baseball and boll weevils shaped southern cotton farming through John D. Rogers work at Brazos bottom plantation since 1909. Rogers, a state registered cotton breeder, studied agriculture to pursue baseball at the University of Georgia in 1905 and led the adoption of a new cotton variety from Acala, Mexico, found by the USDA in 1908.

Heat Affects Cotton Growth and Insect Activity
Dr. F L Thomas of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station reports that extreme heat 98 to 100 degrees slows cotton growth for a day, hastens maturity, and can trigger cotton insect migrations. Weevils may spread in bottom land cotton while larger upland fields see reduced grub survival. Second generation bollworms likely decline, and leafworm infestations may be spotted with early cotton maturity.
