He is survived by his widow and daughter Margaret who married Ensign Roswell Miller of New York. Carnegie led a secluded life and withdrew from public activity lately. He was born November 25 1835 in Dunfermline Scotland and rose from a telegrapher to steel magnate via Woodruff Sleeping Car company Keystone Bridge Works Union Iron Works and Carnegie Steel later merging into United States Steel in 1901. He endowed libraries universities and other foundations and authored several books while holding multiple LL D degrees.
