Wheelock People Plan Cemetery Work and New Association

Del Rio Man Found After Week Lost in Woods

Ben Southall of Del Rio was found Monday night near Eagle Pass after seven days lost in the woods. He was weakened and exhausted from exposure and hardship but no clear cause of his wandering could be learned. Posses including Sheriff Hausser and Southall’s father located him.

Round-Up Brings 13 Children For Free Health Screening

The Bryan Parent-Teacher Association and county public health board held a free clinic this morning in the Public Health Nurse’s office. Thirteen children were examined with many more requesting blanks for their physicians, totaling over 25 aided by the summer round-up. Doctors Searcy, Cline and Jones conducted the checks. a second examination is planned about 30 days after the school starts.

Henry Prairie church reports 41 new members in revival

Henry Prairie Baptist Church ended a two week revival last Sunday with 41 additions, 23 by baptism at Ector Crossing Cedar Creek. Rev Alpha Shelton preached with Rev Lem Crouch assisting, prayer meetings under trees drew many, and the church shifted to half time with services on the second and fourth Sundays.

Bank Bandits Escape With $16 000 Cash

Three robbers held up a bank in Woodmere New York and escaped with 16000 dollars in cash in an automobile. Brower was the bank official targeted in the incident.

A wind and sand storm swept through this afternoon about 2:80 generating a light shower. Dust blanketed streets before a brief rain shower settled the dust as a rain gauge at Eagle Printing Co. logged .05 inch at 3:00. The rainfall is seen as beneficial for crops and relief from heat.

Two Texas Grandfathers Die in Rifle Duel Near Sweetwater

In Scurry county near Sweetwater two farmers aged 65 and 70, W Reed and J D Ware, were killed in a duel after a long feud. Ware reportedly fired first. both men left behind large families as the quarrel ended with rifles rather than fists.

Ex-Convict Brown Suspected in Multiple California Murders

A man calling himself P. Pr. Brown, arrested in Needles, California, confessed to strangling at least five women in the state. Sheriff Walter Shay planned to bring him to San Bernardino for questioning as authorities seek corroboration to possibly solve several linked cases along the coast. Brown claimed escape from Patton State Asylum and said he had prior prison terms in Colorado and Idaho.

A chicken fry was held Tuesday evening at six o'clock at Blue Hole on the Brazos River as a summer school affair for the Christian Endeavor Society of the Free Baptist Church. Forty three members and visitors attended.

Bryan People Attend Funeral at Caldwell

Mr and Mrs C L Benson and children and Mrs Mary Ewing with Mrs Hattie Welch left this afternoon for Caldwell to attend the funeral of Mrs W S Lackey who died Tuesday morning. Services are to be held at 4:30 this afternoon with burial in Caldwell cemetery. The Lackeys were longtime Burleson county settlers and her husband Rev W S Lackey served as Providence Church pastor for over 25 years.

New Catholic Church Planned for Bryan

Maurice Sullivan of Houston is commissioned to design a new Saint Anthony's Catholic Church in Bryan to replace the church destroyed by fire. The brick concrete and tile northern Italian style building will rise on the former Capt G W Smith property. The two story house has been moved to the north line to make way for construction.

Eastern Star to Celebrate Robert Morris Birthday

Bryan Chapter No 222 schedules a birthday celebration for Robert Morris founder of the Order of the Eastern Star on Tuesday August 31. An evening picnic supper will be held at Midway Tourist Park College Highway with all Eastern Stars and families invited. Members should bring a basket for the meal and a program of entertainment has been arranged.
