East Texas residents ride LG N for A&M College Short Course

Health officer urges hot season care for children

State health officer Dr H O Sappington warns mothers to protect children during hot weather. He recommends milk fruit and vegetables in five meals daily and avoiding candy between meals to protect digestion and growth. Miss Duffy praised the American Health Congress of 16 national health groups as a success and a landmark in multi-field health work. Walter Tucker Falls from Scaffold at Fair Store

Walter Tucker employed by Hugo John fell about 16 feet from a second floor scaffold at the Fair Store while plastering. He landed at the stair foot beside onlookers and was rushed to the hospital with extensive bruising but no broken bones, though internal injury feared.

Parker Former Bryan Citizen Attends Short Course Visit

T. W. Parker of San Angelo county superintendent of Tom Green, here for a conference of county superintendents at A and M College Short Course and visiting his sister Miss Ida J. Parker. Parker formerly lived in Bryan and was Brazos county school superintendent. This is his first Bryan visit in many years.

Funeral Held for Mrs. John Cuchia in Hearne

Mrs. John Cuchia died in an Austin sanitarium after a week of treatment. Her body was brought to Hearne by the I G N railway for funeral services at St Mary's Church conducted by Fathers Brain and Gleissner. Surviving are her husband John and eight children. Attendees from Bryan included Chas Todaro and Mike Altamore.

Wheeless and Miss Riley Wed in Bryan Tuesday

Henry Wheeless son of Mr and Mrs H T Wheeless and Miss Mildred Riley of Beaumont were married at the home of Rev J J Pipkin Baptist Missionary pastor on Tuesday night at 730 oclock. Miss Riley has worked as bookkeeper for H H Whiting plumbing firm Beaumont 740 Liberty Avenue. The couple will reside with his parents while Wheeless remains employed at Emmet Drug Store.

Ford Car Goes Into Ditch on College Road

A Ford touring car driven by Charley Salvaggio of Stephan Bottling Works turned onto its side in a deep ditch on the south side of College Road near the Country Club bridge Sunday afternoon. Witnesses said a radius rod broke, causing loss of control. Salvaggio escaped injury though the car was damaged. A second vehicle near the culvert had a missing right front wheel, likely struck curb by weeds masking the cement edge.

Bryan Folks Traveling in Europe Heard From in Rome

Mrs. M W Sims received a message from her daughter Miss Pattie Sims touring Europe with the Martha D Willis party from Rome Italy. The letter says a delightful trip with good weather no accidents and no sickness. Accompanying Pattie are Mrs John E Astin Miss Nanne Shel Waldrop and Miss Alice Allen of Hearne. They will sail from South Hampton August 19 on the Audnia and arrive in New York August 28 then travel to Bryan.

Slayings in Houston Stun Bryan Area Victims Named

Police probe two shooting deaths with robbery suspected in Margoli slaying and Johnson case. Joe Margoli a suburban merchant died after ambush while Lee Chatham 24 of Rice University was riding with him. W Allister Johnson 24 a Rice graduate died from a head wound while driving home. Johnson family details and interment in Navasota.

Waco Car Flips In Ditch Near Wellborn On Sunday

A Ford sedan carrying Mrs. Lizzie Turner and three Turner nieces from Waco to Houston turned over in a four foot ditch south of Wellborn Sunday morning due to a defective lug bolt. All occupants escaped serious injury with minor scratches to Mrs. Turner. They were rejoined to continue their trip after repairs at Hotel Bryan.

Dog Attacks Child Near Benchley Mumford Area

Frances Killough seven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Killough was attacked by a hound dog as she walked to the fields to help pick black eyed peas. The dog knocked her down and the older girl Lupie Durant intervened saving her. The foreman Poleon Sikes killed the dog and shipped its head to Austin for hydrophobia testing. The girl received medical care at a local physician.

Grimes County Woman's Council Meet in Bedias

The Grimes County Woman's Council held a full day session in Bedias with about 125 attendees. Miss Abbie Sevier of Brazos County judged house dresses. a Farmers' Short Course scholarship was funded by Mrs. Stoneham. Prizes included linen napkins and towels. Mrs Brown of Navasota arranged a local girl scholarship. Luncheon was hosted by Bedias women, and the program covered welfare, civic issues, and a proposed Grimes county park.

McCoy Finds First Open Boll of Cotton on Bryan Waste Land

C L McCoy sent the Eagle the first open boll of cotton from his ten acre crop in Bryan. He has cultivated waste lands and vacant lots in the city for several years and predicts a particularly good yield this year.

Nine Girls Win Scholarships to The Short Course

At the Bryan court house during the boys and girls encampment nine girls won scholarships to the A and M Farmers Short Course opening Monday August 2. Recipients include Lucile Jones Annie Tabor Alice West Pansy Sousares Jewel Hearne Gladys Krenek Lena Catalena Ella Crenshaw and Virginia Kurten was barred from one due to prior award. Two women had already received scholarships making a total of nine recipients.

Jim Colson May Lose Eye After Sunday League Injury

Jim Colson a student of A and M Consolidated living in College Park may lose an eye from an injury in a Sunday School League baseball game. He was struck in the eye, causing hemorrhage and the physician fears an operation to remove the eye may be necessary pending developments.

McIntoshes Return From Eight Weeks in Tennessee

Dr. D. C. McIntosh professor of Agricultural Education at A and M College Texas and his family returned from an eight week stay in Tennessee where he lectured at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. They traveled via Mobile Alabama and New Orleans Louisiana and visited Stone Mountain on the trip home to Bryan.

Insects Found Beneficial to Cotton Plants in Texas

Texas A and M Experiment Station reports that very small white eggs on cotton stalks are from lacewing flies, beneficial insects feeding on plant lice and flea hoppers. Entomologist Dr. F L Thomas cites telegram from Mansfield, Tarrant County, confirming identification and advising farmers not to mistake them for leaf worm or flea hopper eggs.

Lions Club Treats Rural Camp Boys And Girls At Encampment

The Lions Club of Bryan served seven gallons of ice cream and 500 cones to agricultural club youths at the encampment on the courthouse lawn. Stephan Ice and Bottling Works donated eight cases of soda water. Rural work committee members and other Lions assisted, led by chairman J. E. Hensarling, with participants including L. L. First Open Boll of Cotton Grown in Bryan Displayed

The first open cotton boll in Bryan is shown on Bryan Street in front of the Bryan Cafe. Mrs. S. W. Buchanan’s stalk produced 16 bolls and 80 forms, planted March 22 with squares by May 28 blooms by June 10 and full boll July 29.

The County Democratic Convention met in Bryan Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with W. Higgs presiding. Committees on Credentials Platform and Resolutions named. resolutions urged Moody for Governor, support for public education, law enforcement, and unity. Car Crash in Galveston Ends in Death of Edward Connett

Edward Connett of Galveston dies after a rear end collision at Fourteenth and Boulevard, when a roader driven by William Ginn collides with a car driven by D E Aden of College Station. A woman and child in the Aden car are slightly injured. Ginn faces charges of negligent homicide and intoxicated driving. The Aden car carried Mrs D E Aden Miss L Parkhill D Aden and Rachel Beasley. Connett is survived by a wife two daughters and several siblings. funeral was held at his home and he is buried at Lakeview Cemetery. County officials conducted witness interviews.
