E J Fountain, Bry an planter, received a Chamber of Commerce check for 25 for bringing the first bale of cotton grown in the Bryan trade territory to the city. The 575 pound Missdell variety bale from the Fountain plantation sold for 10 cents a pound to Searcy Smith of Bush and Witherspoon of Waco.
Approximately $9,000 in loans were made available to ex-service men in Bryan and Brazos County via the Red Cross office. The new federal provision allows certificates under two years old to receive loans up to half face value at 3.5 percent interest, effective July 21, 1932, per Mrs. Albert Buchanan.
Dr. W C Brown of the U S Department of Agriculture reports July results show 34 tick infused premises found among 2900 inspected in Brazos County after two months of systematic dipping. He credits strong cooperation from stockmen and farmers for the satisfactory progress.
The Texas highway commission plans to retire 150 000 in Brazos county highway bonds set aside for state highway purposes. This aligns with a policy asking counties to provide no funds for state designated highway improvements. Plans aim to complete Highway 21 work from Navasota to the Brazos River, with some projects deferred due to dumping and settling.
Hubert M. Harrison of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce urged limited government and fiscal restraint at the 23rd annual short course for farmers and ranchers in College Station. Jess E. Hensarling, 44, Bryan grocer and Self Service owner, died Tuesday evening at his Sandy Point road farm from heart disease while walking toward his car. Funeral services were held at Free Will Baptist church with Rev. E. C. Morris officiating. Interment in Bryan city cemetery. He is survived by two wives Myrtle Cole and Erma Cloud, children Jesse Myrtle Hensarling, Olive Ruth, Jess E. Jr., a father and mother, three sisters Amon Williams, W F Moody, J A Moody, and two brothers J A Hensarling and Evander.
Governor Sterling announced plans for a short one week special session to address county highway bond burdens. He will not push state employee salary adjustments, deferring that issue to the January legislature. Proclamation expected this month ahead of the Democratic state convention in Lubbock on September 13.
In Livingston a $10 gold certificate dated 1873 was found sewn inside an old felt mattress once owned by the Bean family. The bill, discovered during a cover replacement, was inspected by the Federal Reserve Bank of Houston and deemed worth ten dollars. The paper likely became attached to the mattress as it was passed down through generations.
The Bryan Fire Prevention Board with the Bryan Brazos County Chamber of Commerce and city officials plans a house to house inspection to identify and urge elimination of fire hazards such as rubbish or junk. Inspections will be conducted by Bryan fire department members who will be paid. chamber committee covers part of the cost.
Joe Howard suffered a slight stroke of apoplexy Monday morning and is at his home on North Washington avenue under a physician. He rose at 5 AM, visited Bryan Cafe for coffee, then grew ill and became partially paralyzed. Friend Earl Tatum took him home and a doctor was called. Howard showed improvement by Tuesday.
The Bryan Community Band will present the fourth goodwill concert in a series arranged by the Trade Extension committee of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce. The 8 p m performance aims to greet Edge residents with a delegation of Bryan business people attending.
S Mamiloff and family moved into their brick veneer residence on Ursuline avenue on Thursday. The home features modern conveniences and is finished beautifully on the interior.
An old model T Ford caught fire on West 24th street late Monday afternoon. Little damage occurred and the blaze was extinguished with the aid of a chemical.
Burglars entered the Millican postoffice and railway depot Sunday night. Sheriff J. H. Reed was told by Robert Dunlap that the building had been well ransacked but nothing was missing in the initial checkup. The attempted burglary will be reported to federal postal authorities.
Members of the Woman's Auxiliary of the American Legion Earl Graham Post 159 will act as Kellogg cereal saleswomen in Bryan grocery stores Saturday. Each member will be paid, with bonuses for sales quotas and top seller. Friends are urged to defer buying until Saturday.
Sheriff J. H. Reed and Constable Horace Reed investigated a burglary at the J. N. Sramek store in Smetana. Thieves gained entry by breaking a rear door lock and stole six sacks of sugar, tobacco, and 26 cents in pennies. no suspects identified.
The Democratic county convention chose delegates for the September 13 state convention at Lubbock. A unit rule was adopted. a single committee nominated delegates while floor selections added many names including J. G. Minkert J. W. Batts Lamar Bethea F. L. Henderson M. E. Wallace A. S. Ware. Oak McKenzie presided with A. S. Ware elected permanent chairman.
A grass fire erupted in the backyard of D. S. Buchanan on East 29th Street shortly before noon Monday. Firefighters responded at 11 40 and contained the blaze with no damage reported.
Mrs Annett Howard Echols of Hearne died in a Bryan hospital Monday at 1 00 am after a ten day illness. An infant son born a few days earlier is dead at birth. Pneumonia and complications listed as causes. Funeral held in Hearne with burial in Hearne cemetery. She was 22, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Howard, sister of Joe Kirkland Robert Marsh Jack Howard, and Margaret Ann, all of Hearne. Survived by husband parents and five brothers.
Missionary Miss Dora Baller Istedt of Manor visits Bryan Farmers Market while attending a Farmers Short Course at A and M College. She says their market operates Wednesdays and Saturdays and focuses on bread cakes pies jellies and similar goods.
The Southwest Telephone Company restructures to base a Bryan district headquarters in Bryan Center for District of Phone Co. M. C. Atkins will run the Bryan office and district, taking charge August 1 as Ben F. Noel resigns. Atkins has 17 years with the company and will move his family to Bryan mid August. E. P. Seaman remains district manager, Georgetown HQ, with a smaller district.
Brazos County commissioners continue as board of equalization and expect to finish by week’s end. They anticipate reducing the county rendition from 10.8 million dollars to about 9 million.
Nineteen Bryan and College Station Boy Scouts left at 1 30 p m Monday for a week at Hall's Lake. Troop 2 led by E R Bryant Troop 4 led by M L Rees and H J Rees with assistants and F L Thomas of the College Station troop accompany the party. The camp runs through next Sunday with a regular Scout program for badges and advancement.
Sam Crenshaw science teacher and assistant basketball coach at Stephen F. Austin High School earned a Master of Science in chemistry. Miss Willie Heath of Madisonville earned a Bachelor of Arts. They joined guests including Miss Mary Martha Black and E. W. Crenshaw Sr. for the Georgetown commencement. Heath’s degree was awarded Monday night.
Funeral services for H G Stallings were held at College Avenue Baptist Church with Rev Roy Holloman and Rev Ed Harris officiating. Brazos Union Lodge No 129 A F & A M conducted the grave service at Bryan city cemetery. Stallings died from injuries after falling from a painter's scaffold at A M College while working on the main building.
Work began Monday on new sidewalks around Bowie Elementary, finishing touches added to the remodeled school plant.
Republicans of Brazos County met in convention Saturday and elected delegates to the state convention. Delegates named include J. Allen Myers Tyler Ha and Frank A. Myers. John Grant was endorsed for governor and the Hoover administration was strongly endorsed.
Oak McK Macken ie, a Methodist layman, told the Bryar Federation of Young People's Societies that youth face their greatest challenge in religion and public morals not sports or science. He spoke at the first program in College Avenue Baptist church on Youth in the Church Life of Today.
