COLLEGE STATION Aug. 1 The first meeting of organized farmers at the A and M College of Texas occurred in July 1898 marking the Texas Farmers Congress. Dr J H Connell former president of the Oklahoma A and M College recalled the event in a talk before the nineteenth annual Farmers Short Course. He described early development of demonstration work and noted his roles as director of experiment stations professor of agriculture and former Texas Farmers Congress president. He is now in Dallas as executive secretary.
Aug 1 report from Houston states Sheriff T A Binford destroyed over a ton of sugar seized from liquor raids. The sugar was given to Faith Home the Home of the Good Shepherd Harris County School for Girls and other institutions after judges Whit Boyd and Langston King ordered destruction of the evidence.
An oil explosion at the Indiana Refining Company plant in Lawrenceville Illinois caused burns to between 40 and 50 workers. Thirty six men were rushed to Vincennes hospitals with four in serious condition as property damage was limited to about $1000. Fire crews extinguished the blaze after a steam still head blew out.
Tass D. Watterson a former Notre Dame reserve halfback and Southwestern alumnus has been signed to coach athletics and teach history at Allen Academy in Bryan. He arrived August 1 to begin duties, with home in Austin and a BA degree.
Rural Brazos county pupils move to Bryan schools per Superintendent H. L. Durham. Expect over 200 transfers after all papers arrive. Last year 186 students transferred in.
A Pure Food Products Company plant in Dallas was destroyed by fire, causing about 80,000 dollars in damage. Two firefighters were slightly injured while battling the blaze today.
In Houston on August 1 G W Lloyd a 33 year old lunch room employer was identified as the man killed when struck by a truck last night.
Judge Charles Gainer the Democratic state senate nominee spoke at the Farmers Short Course luncheon for former A M College students held Tuesday noon. Newt Jones presided over the 200 plus attendees with President Walton and other officials in attendance as Gainer pledged support for the college and its needs.
In New York on August 1 Miss Louisa Amelia Dehostos, 38, set fire to herself in her apartment over a love disappointment. Found unconscious, she died later in a hospital.
Ballard W. George of Corsicana, manager of Alvin Owsley's Senate campaign, announced his support today for Congressman Tom Connally of Marlin in the United States Senate runoff in Dallas.
The New Orleans Cotton Exchange secretary H. G. Hester released figures showing world consumption of American cotton in the past season at 15,838,000 bales, down from 17,368,000 bales the previous season.
Improvements in Bryan totaling about $50 000 are underway in the business district, as stated by W H Cole president of the Bryan Building and Loan Association. Residential construction is also active with several new homes rising. The growth mirrors oil boom activity seen in similarly sized Texas cities.
United States Senator Earle B. Mayfield will speak here this month in the runoff primary. A large crowd from across the county is expected to attend the night address, following his strong showing in Brazos county where his vote exceeded expectations and now leads the state by about 20 000 votes.
Washington August 1 The Republican campaign fund was set at four million dollars by Chairman Work and party leaders. The prior campaign's cost was estimated at just over three million dollars.

Fort Worth reports John Fobus a 35 year old Dallas man died from injuries after being struck by a truck yesterday. The incident occurred Tuesday with authorities noting the fatality city and age.
PAMPA, Aug. 1. Mrs A W Chisum of Miami was killed and her daughter Mrs Grady Bailey was probably fatally injured when the automobile they rode in ran off a culvert and overturned near Miami late last night.
Word arrived from California that Judge W. W. Grubbs age 80 died there. He was known as the father of industrial education in Texas and formerly lived in Greenville.
Cotton futures slide 50 points as local spot prices show 18 to 18 12 cents per pound. Local traders note weaker demand while buyers watch yields and weather.
Mrs. Guy Berry of Mesquite, Dallas County, and Mrs. D. D. Moore of Livingston, Polk County, were named state winners at the 1928 Texas Farmers Short Course at A and M College. Berry won Class 1 for renovations under $25, Moore won Class 2 for improvements over $25, each receiving a $25 prize.
The Alpha Zeta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi the national honorary extension workers fraternity established at Texas A and M during the Farmers Short Course week. The 69 member chapter named O B Martin chief W A Lloyd initiated the group J L Quicksall named Dean of the House of Pioneers John R Edmonds district agent secretary treasurer Miss Lucy Brogtion assistant secretary and Miss Sally Hill district home demonstration agent assistant analyst.
Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Howell and Mr. and Mrs. J. Webb Howell returned today from a 4000 mile automobile trip through the South and into the Eastern States. They reached Pennsylvania and visited four state capitols including Ohio Arkansas Kentucky and Tennessee. They toured resorts and enjoyed a five weeks tour with interest in the presidential campaign. Business conditions and prospects were favorable in most sections they visited. They noted Texans rarely vacation in the Southeast preferring the West but praised the Southeast scenery and hotels.
J B Pace twenty from Garland Texas was killed and G R Reid from Oklahoma was seriously hurt when a pipe loading boom touched an electric line in Williamsburg Kansas. Fire and police units responded to the accident scene. The incident occurred on August first and involved a truck elevator used for pipe loading at the site.
A Southern railway passenger train hit an automobile near Charlotte North Carolina today killing four people and injuring a fifth. The dead are Mr and Mrs Toplin their nine year old son and Mrs W D Hartsell all of Oaksboro.
Nine workmen were killed today when the steel gate of the Welland canal at Thold Ontario collapsed, precipitating thirty men to the bottom of the canal. The accident occurred near St. Catharines as workers labored at the gate, with investigators expected to probe the cause and rescue operations continuing for survivors.
The event drew 773 women from 76 counties for county and district preliminaries with statewide awards. DeWitt McMurray of the Dallas Semi-Weekly Farm News distributed prizes, naming class winners and runners-up from Kemah Galveston county Riviera Kleberg county Electra Wichita county.
