State Insurance Commission reports 1928 fire costs in Texas towns at 11 738125 across 5044 fires with over half of blazes of unknown origin. Known causes include matches smoking defective chimneys and flues exposure to fire and sparks on roofs oil and hot grease and coal fires.
The East Texas Chamber of Commerce convention in Bryan is short by about $4000 of the lowest estimate to cover expenses, with total costs pegged near $13,000. Only about $5941 has been raised in Bryan, and organizers plan badge sales on the streets and at three banks to boost registrations ahead of the event. W N Blanton praised plans but urged broader advance sales, predicting a large turnout, possibly the largest in Bryan's history, with thousands of visitors expected.

In Mexico City on April 24 tension rose at presidential headquarters awaiting word from General Calles. Rebels were believed to hold Masiaca and San Antonio, Sonora, with about 6,000 troops entrenched after a 48 hour fight, while Calles was reportedly northward from San Blas.
The seventh annual convention of the Seventh District of the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs opens in Snyder on April 25 and runs three days. General chairman Mrs. H. G. Towle reports reservations from most district clubs representing 52 counties and 125 member towns.

In Cleveland police report a gang war erupts with dynamite bombs at the home of Police Captain William McMasters and the residence of Sergeant Patrick Holland. Two men, identified as Skinny Fuerstman and Issadore Shiller, were later shot dead amid rival bootlegging factions. No injuries were reported from the bomb blasts.

President M. Lawrence of the Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation Association calls a meeting of the legislation committee and all interested members in committee room 3, state capitol, at 9 30 a m Sunday. Leonard Tillotson will present a draft bill to create the Brazos River district with Governor Moody expected to allow introduction. Attendees from Bryan and College Station include Jno M Lawrence E H Astin Mrs Lee J Rountree A B Conner A and M Experiment Station and A D Jackson secretary.
J. W. Longley license and weight inspector for the state highway department was assaulted by three men in Madisonville while weighing an overloaded truck. He was knocked unconscious and beaten. he returned to work after medical treatment. Water resident T. M. Hensarling pled guilty to assault and paid an $8 fine. Division Engineer Blair brought Longley back to Bryan.
In Texas Austin April 24 the House debated a concurrent resolution allowing Senate adjournment for a study trip to East Texas state institutions. Rep Geo C Purl of Dallas accused the proposed junket of delaying bills and tried to send the measure to the State Affairs Committee, but the motion failed 80 to 22.
A party of Allen Academy students and faculty returned from Galveston after attending the funeral of George Christensen a former student fatally injured in an auto race accident in Houston. The group included Cadet Major Braun Cadet Captains Gonzales Mallard and Cadet Lieutenants Borden Locke Wheeles and Dunnan with Bugler Sergeant Black plus Sergeant C B Jones of the U S Army and W C Alexander director of Y M C A work at Allen Academy.
G L Craighead of Valley View claims a champion pig born on April 24. At two months it weighed 41 pounds, then 214 pounds more after two months. At six months the pig weighed 360 pounds. The animal was raised on threshed maize, commercial pig feed and skimmed milk.
Kurten principal David Bunting announces two spring commencement nights in the Kurten School auditorium Brazos county. April 25 features primary and middle grade programs with a seventh grade one act play followed by promotions. April 26 graduation exercises at 8 pm include four tenth grade graduates with Rosa Mae Bukowski as valedictorian and Mrs Albert Buchanan as speaker on Building a Life. County Supt F M Vance will present diplomas.
The Senate and House unanimously accept Bryan's invitation to the third annual Chamber of Commerce convention in Bryan May 5 to 7. Delegation heads to Austin to receive the invitation and plans a May 7 special train to attend church services luncheon and events at A and M College Kyle Field race and cadet review.
Mrs. Mary Buckholtz Adams and Mrs. H B Smoot, former Bryan residents, visited several former girlhood friends today. Adams is daughter of Judge John A Buckholtz and Mrs Buckholtz, pioneers in Bryan and Brazos County, Smoot formerly Annie Fry of Giddings. Local friends welcomed them during their short stay.

Galveston Chamber of Commerce sponsors a trade trip from Galveston to West Texas May 19 to 26 visiting Brownwood San Angelo Sweetwater Lubbock Plainview and Amarillo. At least twenty five persons expected. Sentiment sought as a return call for a Sweetwater delegation visit. Possible separate trips to the Rio Grande valley and to East Texas proposed.
In Nicholasville Kentucky on April 24 Dr John Welch age 70 a former State Senator and Katherine Wolf 12 died in a fire that destroyed the physician s home Welch was treating Wolf s family children for scarlet fever and had brought Katherine there to protect her from the disease.
The cotton market closed 25 to 30 points higher with local spot prices from 17.75 to 18.00. This movement reflects a modest uptick in demand and prices across nearby certificates.
Canyon report details J H Morgan of Happy who kept 78 pullets yielding 752.50 in nine months from egg sales. He bought 1000 chicks with 898 surviving, 520 roosters sold to cover initial flock cost. From April last year to January 1 1929 eggs brought 1060, feed cost 307.50, net profit 752.50 about 84 per month.
Galveston will host several hundred Shriners in May as members of Aladdin Temple Columbus Ohio stop over on the way to Los Angeles for the fifty sixth imperial council. Abba temple Mobile may also visit Galveston during that period.
