A reprinted 1877 letter urges thrift in cotton farming and debt avoidance. It advises winter land breaking, spring rebreaking, shallow planting in 3.5 foot rows, early planting, thinning to one stalk per hill at 12 inches, and working with own labor to avoid debt and failure.
Mrs. B. J. Delamater of Caldwell, mother of Major B. J. Delamater, has been ill at her son’s East 26th street home but is now much improved and siting up. Mrs. E. J. Morris recovering after a Bryan hospital operation. Mrs. H. M. Warr and Miss Indigo Colvin of Beaumont attend J. T. Coulter funeral in Bryan. Mrs. Lee J. Rountree travels to Dallas for the Second District Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs annual convention and tariff discussion impacts on the American home.
Announcement from C. W. Risinger of the Steep Hollow cemetery association reports that Thursday was set for a work day to clear grass and weeds, tidy graves, and improve the grounds for spring. About 50 men attended, lunch under the trees near the old Steep Hollow church, and the day was praised as one of the best in years.
Local officers report a week of petty thefts across Bryan with items stolen from back yards porches and pantries. Burglars took washing supplies gasoline vessels garden tools canned goods and pantry items, leaving homes sparse and cupboards bare.
Curtis Morris statistician of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce will conduct a two day fact finding study on taxation in Bryan and Brazos County. He will work with a local committee and meet officials including city county and school district leaders. The study aims to be noncritical and to avoid salary or personnel changes.
Carl Cannon of Groesbeck was nominated for Second Division commander and Mrs. W. L. Exell of Beaumont for division vice president during the annual convention of the Second Division American Legion in Texas and auxiliaries at Palestine. Nominations will be ratified at Corpus Christi August 1 2 3. L. Van Perkins of Cameron named delegate to the National Legion convention with Paul Exter of Houston as alternate. Oakwood drew first prize money for perfect membership. Lufkin second for longest mileage. Liberty post had largest auxiliary attendance from outside the division. Corsicana highest auxiliary representation. Sixth District had most units registered. Resolutions adopted at Palestine.
Wright a 20 year old was arrested by Constable Horace Reed on a charge of stealing gasoline from a North Zulch filling station. He was driving a stolen car taken from Mineral Wells and returned there this morning as district court sits in Mineral Wells. The car owner and a deputy sheriff accompanied the trip to Bryan. Wright admitted stealing the car and his case is expected to go before the grand jury soon.
Funeral services for James Thomas Coulter were held at 2:30 p m in Bryan after his death in Beaumont. Born April 25 1848 in Arkansas he lived in Bryan earlier and later resided with his sons in Beaumont. He leaves three sons and a daughter with many Bryan friends. Burial was in Bryan city cemetery beside his wife.
Allen Academy officials announce Bishop H. A. Boaz of Houston Texas will deliver the baccalaureate sermon to the senior class on Sunday May 22 at the First Methodist church. He will be assisted by pastor Rev Ed J Harris.
Dr. C. W. Brown directs tick eradication work in Brazos County and changes the dipping vat name for the Jones bridge area to George Foster No. 74 from Rosprim No. 74.

Bryan city officials reported $37 700 in bonds retired and burned at a Friday meeting. Over 16 months, $101 700 in obligations were retired with interest payments stopped, and some retirements bought in at ninety cents on the dollar. The commission also expanded peddler restrictions and opposed motor truck freight at railroad expense while approving a new police chief and scheduling more discussions on a new well.
Virgie Nero, once given a five year suspended sentence in a killing case, ran amuck Sunday and is now jailed. Police filed two charges against him for carrying a prohibited weapon and assault with intent to murder. His wife says he threatened to kill her and other neighbors before police subdued him.
Rev. E. E. Carrington of Bryan has been called to lead the Baptist church at Plantersville in Grimes county. Services are set for every third Sunday morning and one evening each month.
Many markets in Brazos county showcase a wide variety of fresh produce and farm products. The Farmers Market offers fat hens milk fed fryers butter buttermilk oxes turnips cabbage spinach onions and more. Beginning April 13 the market will be open Wednesdays and Saturdays with quick sales noted early.
County commissioners canvassed the Saturday rural school district elections and reported to D. J. McDonald. M. Bethany and N. C. Cole won county trustee posts with Cole dominant in Harv ey district. District results list many local names and districts from Millican to Knob Prairie.
The county treasurer Roy Montgomery told the county commissioners that Brazos County is not in financial trouble and reported a cash balance of 175 492.01 on hand or on deposit. Commissioners approved highway work estimates totaling 9 060.09 for Highway 6 south of Bryan and Highway 21 west of Bryan and allotted road and bridge funds to precincts 1 2 4 with 4 000 and 5 000 dollars respectively.
The Highway Commission asked bids on 100 miles of highway improvements estimated to cost 2,100,000 dollars. It will award contracts April 23. The projects include 86 miles of
Construction on a 2000000 statewide building program at Texas A and M College proceeds with the petroleum engineering geology building set to begin around May 1. The four story brick and stone structure will house the petroleum engineering geology and engineering experiment station departments. It features a 102 foot tower and a reinforced concrete frame with tile inserts and geometric geology panels.
George Seymour, negro, was arrested and jailed in connection with the Sunday cutting of a woman living on the Sam Upright place. He allegedly beat his wife who fled to another woman’s house, where Seymour attacked her when she intervened to stop further abuse.
Pin Money grocery and Martin's meat market will occupy the T. O. Woodyard building, formerly J. Groginsky and Son, as quickly as repairs permit.
The Young People's League of the Bryan Presbyterian church held its district meeting at First Presbyterian Church in Navasota on Saturday afternoon. Twenty on e members from Bryan attended along with senior and intermediate groups. Miss Cora Ellen Pos was elected district president for the coming year.
Miss Birdie Risinger of Bryan and Mrs. Neville Colson of Iola earned top grades on the winter quarter honor roll at Sam Houston College. Each student made three A's and two B's, reflecting highest marks among the listed scholars.
Prospect club presented a community program at Steep Hollow school with county agent C L Benson urging rural development through home church and school. Sam Manning won two dozen Rhode Island Red eggs for best club report. Cargill band provided music including The Lost Sheep on the Mountain.
Oline Walker seven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Jim Walker of the oil mill area was cut about the face and eyes when the car carrying her from a P T A event at Travis School rear ended a parked truck on East 25th street. A brother drove the car and said he did not see the truck. She was taken to Wilkerson clinic where several stitches were needed and she was resting well after treatment.
W. S. Higgs secretary of the Bryan school board announces that at a Friday night meeting Harry L. Durham was re elected as superintendent of Bryan City Schools for another year. Teacher elections will be set by the board at a later month meeting.
Madison County plans its fifth annual agricultural fair this autumn with dates set for September 29 30 and October 1. County agent B F Vance reports strong exhibitor interest with over half the communities pledging exhibits and a nominal gate fee to visitors.
A K Short of Houston was elected president of the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M College at a bust meeting in the M. M. College Station chapel. The weekend gathering drew over 300 ex-students and featured a new 25 member board of directors. President T Q Walton and Senator Charles S Gainer were among speakers and resolutions honored ROTC work and historic campus buildings.
