In April the Sue Haswell Memorial Park, a gift from Tyler Haswell in memory of his mother, enriches Bryan area recreation. The columnist notes many use the park for picnics and relaxation but urges adding tennis courts to enhance wholesome evening and twilight activity.
Mr and Mrs R W Colglazier Jr and their son Bob Jr of San Antonio visit Bryan for a week with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Jno A Moore Mrs W L James of San Antonio ends a Bryan visit with her daughter Mrs Chas H Edge Mrs A S Ware returns from Mart to Bryan with her sister Mrs J G McHaney and their mother Mrs J L Batte accompanies them.
Austin April 5. Chairman W R Ely said the Texas Highway Commission is weighing an order to bar out of state contractors from projects paid entirely by state and county funds. The rule would not apply to federally aided projects. Ely noted some states have exhausted funds driving their contractors to bid on Texas work.
Texas Highway Commission awarded contracts totaling 592 627 for road work on April 5. A 9.6 mile concrete paving project from Bryan to Kurten on Highway 21 was set at 145 113 dollars under Gen LaBoiteaux of Houma Louisiana.
The eighth annual highway short course at Texas A and M College opens Thursday and runs through Saturday. More than 75 highway engineers from Texas, nearby states and Mexico are expected. J T L McNew, professor of highway engineering, directs the course, designed to discuss street and highway problems with round table talks and lectures by state and national experts. Events include a engineers versus contractors baseball game, Aggies spring football finale, a Friday banquet, and baseball clashes with Baylor University Bears.
Brazos county precinct No 1 commissioner Guy Boyett was named to the resolutions committee for the county judges and commissioners convention in Marshall on April 14 with members including Judge C H Kenley Judge A L Bevil Judge R T Wilbanks Mr Pleasant and Judge B P Gentry. The gathering includes a picnic at Caddo Lake and Boyett plans to attend.
Center April 5. There will be no pork shortage on the farm of Doss Hughes. A son on his farm gave birth to a litter of 20 pigs, believed to be a regional record. Hughes expects to enter all pigs in the Shelby County Fair next fall.
Owen W. Sherrill of Georgetown leads Reconstruction Finance Corporation operations in Texas. He reports rapid growth with 11,256 loan applications approved totaling 954,109.60 in requests and 755,252.01 already paid by the Dallas office. April 30 was the last day for ...
Dr. C Woo Brown announces cattle dipping begins April 15 to eradicate the cattle tick. The countywide inspection system covers multiple vats with dates for inspectors Grady Hanover W R Cross Ben Francis W D Mills R W Siegert J H Jones L D C Cowen Wallace Dunlap and many others across dozens of locations including Cottonwood Cameron Ranch and Reed areas.
In San Antonio a red Belgian hare defended its home by killing a tom cat that entered. M M Hansen reports the cat was found dead the next morning, apparently kicked to pieces, after the hare repelled the intruder in a curious home defense tale from April.
Antonio Paz 21 died at Wilkerson Memorial Clinic after a southbound Sunbeam struck his auto at the 24th street crossing and dragged it to 25th street. Eyewitnesses say Paz was thrown from the car onto the cowcatcher and later under the locomotive.
The American Legion Earl Graham Post 159 plans the largest Bryan Fourth of July celebration with a monster barbecue. Albert Goodman chairs arrangements. The post notes memorials for William M. Ray and discusses Americanization, employment, a March 8 dance at K of C Hall, and the fourth annual Legion Free County Fair.
Dr. B. Youngblood former director of the Texas Agriculture Experiment Station and now an associate in experiment station administration with the U S Department of Agriculture spends a few days at College Station in official capacity. He is accompanied by H W Marston of the editorial staff and will visit Texas substations before returning to Washington.
About 28 000 pounds of flour will be shipped to the Brazos County chapter of the American Red Cross. C M Bethany chapter chairman received word from the St Louis branch that the flour request was approved and forwarded to Chicago for execution. The Chicago office will guide milling and shipping and the flour is expected in 24 pound sacks in the near future.
John A. Lomax of Dallas, famed for decades as the nation’s leading collector and interpreter of cowboy songs and frontier ballads, will appear April 12 at Texas A M College in “Songs of the Cowboys.” The event is presented by the Texas A M College Press Club under E C Bramley.
In the absence of the Millican Methodist pastor, A and M Consolidated Hi-Y Club members led the morning service. Bartlett Phipps Bob Sherwood and Samuel McMillan spoke on Hi-Y work and principles tied to the Beaumont Conference theme Youth Sharing God With Youth. The club aims to lift school and community Christian standards through such outreach.
Six craps players were fined by Justice J. T. McGee after a Sunday disturbance at Con stable Horace Reed. They pled guilty to disturbing the session during a game of sevens and elevens, incurring fines and costs for the incident.
Mrs Elizabeth Moore age 81 years 5 months 26 days died at her son Johns farm home five miles north of Bryan after several days illness. Born in Alabama she had lived in Brazos county a quarter century. She is survived by her son and several grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Moore home by Rev Jesse Thomson with interment in Bryan City Cemetery. Flowers covered the grave and pallbearers included E W Crenshaw Sr E J Beard Lynn Sample J W Harris C R Pressnal Walter Holden.
Justice J. T. McGee officiated a Thursday afternoon wedding at the courthouse between J. R. Burlin and Miss Gussie Mae Schultz daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Schultz of Bryan.
Joseph F. Machos 82 died Thursday at a Bryan clinic after burn injuries at his son's home. He had lived in Brazos county 50 years and is survived by six sons two daughters thirteen grandchildren a brother in Idaho and his wife. Funeral services were held Friday at McCulloch Dansby chapel and St Joseph's Catholic church with burial in Mount Calvary cemetery.
Ben Willis of Houston driving to Waco with the McFadden Agency was badly cut and bruised when his car toppled over while negotiating a sharp curve on the highway between College Station and Bryan. He was taken to Wilkerson clinic in Bryan and restfully recovering today.
J Vernon Brown announces April 15 as the date for the 20th District Interscholastic Meet in Brenham with all events at the Brenham school building. Tennis matches occur this weekend starting 9 a m Saturday April 9. Preliminaries begin 9 a m with debates and declamations for girls and boys in specified rooms and auditorium.
The East Texas Chamber of Commerce launches a Bryan Bryan Brazos County drive led by Mrs. Lee J. Rountree to raise about 250 of a 759 quota in College Station and 500 in Bryan. J E Stanford and the War Rating Board visit Allen Academy for inspection. Allen holds a top rating. The Bryan chamber discusses sending the Allen band to the East Texas convention and notes the resignation of Jno M Lawrence Jr as director.
H L Kokernot ident of the Texas Livestock Marketing Association is named as one of seven advisory committee members to work with the federal farm board on livestock problems in San Antonio with an April 5 dateline.
Bryan merchants join with the Trade Extension committee of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce to mail the Bryan Weekly Eagle to hundreds in the trade area for a limited period. The weekly will feature messages from local merchants as Bryan grows as a regional marketplace and readers are urged to note the county news and merchant offerings.
