Washington officials acknowledge Island residents may seek independence from Cuban rule, but no official confirmation or action plan exists. The United States stresses the Isle of Pines belongs to Cuba by right and international law, with no federal encouragement for separatist moves.
A blaze at 221 East Seventh Street destroyed a six story tenement in New York City early today. Majority of the dead were on their knees engaged in prayer when the flames hit. Police say an incendiary started the fire in rubbish at the shaft bottom and spread through a ground floor grocery. Firemen saved all on the interior fire escapes as other residents clutched valuables. The five listed victims include Giuseppe Randazzo Antonio Lorca Salvatore Tiazza Santa Tiazza and Antonio Selarde.
Havana reports President Palma says no definite information on events at the Isle of Pines and will not discuss the matter until official word. Government officials doubt Roosevelt approves the American bid for a territorial government and doubt Americans on the isle will rush to fill local offices.
In Birmingham on November 16 Robert Webb of Krebs Lumber fatally wounded Nora Scarborough, 22, at a South Side house then shot himself. Webb died instantly. Scarborough survived but is not expected to recover. Coroner investigates possible third party involvement. Scarborough says Webb fired. Webb's family lived in Pelham. Scarborough hails from Smithfield suburb.
The second subscription of 5000 dollars for aid to Jewish victims in Russia has been sent to New York. About twenty five percent of the 25000 dollars raised in this city to date comes from Christian donors.
An extra through freight on the Cotton Belt was wrecked at Antrim Louisiana twenty five miles north of Shreveport when a flue in the boiler blew out. Fireman Townsend suffered slight scalds as the sole injury in the accident.
Acting Public Printer Ricketts says government printing volume matches five or six years ago but has declined sharply in three months. He cites presidential solicitations and department head cuts as key causes, with investigations possibly influencing the downturn. Some staff have been laid off, and fewer workers are expected this winter.
Washington notes that since Secretary Root took office no foreign nationals have been appointed to American consular posts abroad. The reform aims to improve the consular system without congressional action and argues loyalty tests should not hinge on native status during political stress.
New York officials opened tally sheets from the recent mayoral election. Hearst lawyers protested eight of the first thirteen sheets as they differed from counts used to elect Mr. McClellan. In one district a candidate was found to have seven more votes than counted.
