News from St Petersburg and Chicago. Emperor Nicholas plans to stay at Tsarskoe Selo while Count Witte governs from Peterhof. In Chicago, Mayor Dunne pushes steps toward municipal ownership of street railways and proposes a Mueller bill financing.
From St Petersburg on November 14, Social Democrats planned to push for an eight hour workday in factories. London reports the funeral of Sir George Williams founder of the Young Men's Christian Association as he was laid to rest at St Pauls Cathedral after his death on November 6. The service drew thousands including clergy, delegates, the lord mayor, sheriffs and many organizations with messages from international leaders.
The American Federation of Labor reviewed the executive council report in Pittsburg on Tuesday morning. It adopted a four week, one cent per member weekly assessment to support the International Typographical Union’s push for an eight hour day in U S and Canadian job printing plants.
No reply from Mobile by noon Tuesday regarding selling the Southern League baseball franchise and team of Shreveport to Mobile for 13 500. The pending bid seeks to relocate the franchise to Mobile, with the sale still unresolved.
Norfolk physician Dr. L. R. Chiles, 68, was jailed without bond on a charge he performed an operation linked to the illness of Miss Sarah Atkinson, 24, who lies dying at Norfolk Protestant Hospital. James T. Franklin, 25, a former Bedford County native and Norfolk and Western car inspector, is bailed $1500 on aiding and abetting charges. Atkinson initially refused to name Franklin but later identified him and said the operation occurred at Chiles residence. Chiles does not comment and shows heart-related health concerns. Franklin denies guilt but acknowledges two years of visits to Atkinson.
Morris Nathan, arrested in connection with the Cambridge chorus girl Susanna Geary death, was freed in municipal court after the grand jury failed to indict him. He had been summoned as a key witness at the trial of others indicted. The abortion charge against Dr. Percy D. McLeod was quashed as the grand jury had already indicted an accessory in the case.
Atlanta November 14. R Z Justice, a white farmer near Decatur, narrowly escaped lynching by a mob of over 1000 enraged Black men after being accused of assaulting a five year old Negro girl. Police rescued Justice and he maintained his innocence at the station. Authorities and Black bystanders alike voiced belief in Justice's innocence.
