In Minnealis on November 4 Mrs. James M. Brennan fatally shot two of her stepchildren and wounded two others after quarrels about the children. She then shot herself in the breast, with possible fatal outcome. The four Brennan children aged 8 to 15 were wounded or killed. all were taken to the city hospital.
The massacre of American missionaries at Lienchow prompts a Canton viceroy directive to protect missions, punish the guilty, and offer redress. Consul General Lay blames boycott literature for inciting violence and warns isolated stations. Anti-American papers circulate. four Chinese gun boats and 320 soldiers head to Ching Yuen.
Washington reports the state department will send Consul General Lay from Canton to join the Canton viceroy aboard a Chinese gunboat to Lienchow to investigate the massacre of five Presbyterian missionaries. One or two American naval officers from nearby gunboats will assist in the inquiry.
London reports from St. Petersburg that Finland has won its freedom. Delegates presented a manifesto to Prince John Obolensky for imperial signature, proposing a constitution with responsibility resting on the secretary of state and the diet, while Russian ships off Helsinki signal caution to avoid secession.
