Flood conditions worsen from Caruthersville to Baton Rouge as Memphis gauge hits 28.5 feet and river forecasts push toward 29.5. Levee breaches feared at Hollybush. trains rerouted. refugees arrival swells riverfront activity. storms ease in New Orleans area.
New Orleans reports the Mississippi River level stationary since Saturday with no rise as far below Canal Street and a one foot drop in twenty four hours at New Orleans. Favorable winds speed the flow to the gulf and levee boards continue work while weather improves and material is abundant. Rumors of levee breaks and widespread inundation are baseless.
Packery and Shoe Factory in Monterey Mexico plans a packing house and shoe factory with Alfred Bishop Mason as president. John W. de Kay, secretary of United States Packing company, asks Neuvo Leon state government for a concession and pledges not less than $1,000,000 investment in the two ventures.
On March 16, North Memphis reports 39.1 feet, the highest known river level, with fears of 40 feet. Hundreds abandon homes as Wolf River industries close. streetcars falter and skiffs appear. Yazoo and Mississippi Valley schedules disrupted by washouts. levee strengthening and sandbagging rise.
Kingston reports an outbreak of hydrophobia among dogs and cattle with several human bite incidents. Authorities claim about 90 percent of local dogs have been killed to stop the spread.
A boiler explosion at the Republic Iron and Steel East Toledo mill killed John Thompson water tender and injured Melvin Updegraff and Henry Fust. The top boiler weighing a ton was hurled over twenty houses, causing $40,000 in property damage.
Alfred Knapp appeared before Mayor Bosch for a preliminary hearing in Hamilton. He was brought from jail in restraints and remained calm as his lawyers Darby and Thomas of Cincinnati conferred with the mayor and the defendant in the mayor’s private office.
