Eleven people are killed and more than fifty injured when the Fleet Street African Methodist Episcopal church in Brooklyn collapses during funeral preparations. In Yazoo City Mississippi on February 25 a conflict between Ed Stevens a planter and four Black men led to the deaths of Ed Stevens and his brother W H Stevens and the wounding of Wilder. The four Black men fled and a sheriff and posse hunt them. The brothers were killed after a confrontation at Wilder's cabin two miles from the city following a quarrel with Wilder's wife.
In Austin on February 28 the Texas House passed the Blanton pure food bill after amendments to lard and cotton seed. Rep Blount of Anderson County, flashing a blue ribbon clock, fired the alarm and urged adherence to rules while Rep Hancock of Dallas protested the prank and pressed his case for constituents.
Jefferson City report says at a legislature caucus of sixty members Nedringhaus announced he would release supporters from caucus obligation if they agreed on a candidate other than R C Kerens.
Jefferson City Missouri February 28 Two secret caucuses left a deadlock in the senator selection with Niedringhaus supporters pledging to back him again on a joint ballot and Kerens men urged to name a candidate to unite votes. If no agreement is reached Niedringhaus backers will stick with him through the legislative session.
Representative Burton of Ohio, with aid from a few Republicans and some Democrats, seized control of the house to insert a granite requirement for a Cleveland public building. Chairman Hemenway was routed as Burton’s aim passed amid applause, despite opposition and repeated adjournment attempts. The sundry civil bill totals $65,272,280.
AP dispatches report Japanese forces crossed the Shakhe river near Mukden but the crossing site was censored. The advance was checked by Russian reinforcements as fighting continued on the Russian left flank with signs of a Japanese center demonstration while Russian positions remain impregnable.
St. Petersburg reports Russia has ordered back the Lena cruiser officers who violated parole and reduced them in rank. The only defense given is their youth. In London a Hague dispatch says Japanese cruisers intercepted two Dutch liners near Formosa for alleged contraband of war.
Maxime Gor ky was released on two thousand five hundred dollars bail but was rearrested at the fortress gate and Prombly faces deportation from St. Petersburg.
Washington February 28 The senate confirmed Joseph H Kibbey of Arizona as Governor of Arizona and Fenton W Gibson as surveyor of customs for the port of New Orleans. George Gray was a postmaster at Coalgate and Burton S Barnes postmaster at Ponca City Oklahoma.
The National Oil Company case against Texas was upheld by the Supreme Court. Justice McKenna delivered the opinion sustaining the lower court verdict that the company violated the Texas anti trust law and forfeited its right to do business in the state.
The Christian Church trustees in Peoria Illinois announce a search for a new pastor to lead their large influential congregation. The role requires proven preaching leadership and pastoral experience as the church prepares to call a replacement.
Ashley J. Elliott, superintendent of the Illinois Car Service association, said the vacancy seeks a preacher under 35 who is married, evangelist, lodge member and mixer, ready to bear burdens of his flock. Elliott added that “it takes a crank and mixer to move things” for the pulpit.
