Fatal Farmhouse Shootout Kills Two Stevens Brothers

In Yazoo City Mississippi on February 25 a conflict between Ed Stevens a planter and four Black men led to the deaths of Ed Stevens and his brother W H Stevens and the wounding of Wilder. The four Black men fled and a sheriff and posse hunt them. The brothers were killed after a confrontation at Wilder's cabin two miles from the city following a quarrel with Wilder's wife.

Blount Triggers Alarm in Legislature Over Time

In Austin on February 28 the Texas House passed the Blanton pure food bill after amendments to lard and cotton seed. Rep Blount of Anderson County, flashing a blue ribbon clock, fired the alarm and urged adherence to rules while Rep Hancock of Dallas protested the prank and pressed his case for constituents.

Jefferson City Missouri February 28 Two secret caucuses left a deadlock in the senator selection with Niedringhaus supporters pledging to back him again on a joint ballot and Kerens men urged to name a candidate to unite votes. Burton Forces Granite Rule in Cleveland Building Bill

Representative Burton of Ohio, with aid from a few Republicans and some Democrats, seized control of the house to insert a granite requirement for a Cleveland public building. Chairman Hemenway was routed as Burton’s aim passed amid applause, despite opposition and repeated adjournment attempts. The sundry civil bill totals $65,272,280.

AP dispatches report Japanese forces crossed the Shakhe river near Mukden but the crossing site was censored. The advance was checked by Russian reinforcements as fighting continued on the Russian left flank with signs of a Japanese center demonstration while Russian positions remain impregnable.

Washington February 28 The senate confirmed Joseph H Kibbey of Arizona as Governor of Arizona and Fenton W Gibson as surveyor of customs for the port of New Orleans. George Gray was a postmaster at Coalgate and Burton S Barnes postmaster at Ponca City Oklahoma.
