A severe fire tore through Nashville causing extensive damage and high costs. Fire crews battled the blaze for hours, with emergency responders and city officials assessing the aftermath and estimated losses. Local residents were urged to avoid the area as investigations begin.
Reports from St. Petersburg Warsaw and Nashville detail the Washington meeting timing and the trio of plenipotentiaries. Russia and Japan aim for August first ten days with three negotiators, while armistice talks remain on hold and weather may affect moves.
The president expressed a wish that Russian and Japanese plenipotentiaries meet in the United States on August 1 if possible, or at the earliest date thereafter. The White House released that both powers indicated they would hold talks during the first ten days of August and the president urged an August 1 meeting if feasible.

In Lawrenceville near Vincennes Indiana City Marshal Combs George Bells and A S Combs were wounded along with an unknown negro during a race riot sparked as officers tried to arrest a negro who slapped a white man.
Harry R. Grandison, nineteen, a stone cutter, drank carbolic acid in North Memphis after declaring love for a classmate. He collapsed on a schoolyard lawn and died before help could arrive. Letters to his mother and sisters urged others to not let love drive such acts.
Mrs Watt C Gregg killed her four children ages six months to eight years in Grand Lake Colorado then wounded herself and lies in critical condition. Neighbors heard shots as Gregg returned home to find his family slain and the scene described as a grim tragedy likely in a temporary insanity episode.
In Paducah Kentucky J J Spink a railroad conductor and his brother in law J J Walters a piano tuner shot each other in a room of Spinks home where his wife and their newborn lay. Spink died at once and Walters died soon after. The infant died from shock and the mother is kept alive by artificial means. A trivial matter sparked the duel. Spink had long served as a conductor on the Memphis branch of the Illinois Central.
In Verden Oklahoma on June 26 B E Bebee a former Anadarko city clerk killed himself with a shotgun. He had moved to Verden where he ran a mercantile store leaving an invalid widow and several small children.
