Gainesville Texas endures a swelling flood with four to nine foot depths. Hundreds retreat to hills and rooftops as Pecan Creek and the city’s main streets flood. Officials urge aid while reports of losses and potential fatalities circulate. fire bells ring and businesses brace for inundation.
Beeville Texas on July 2 reports ten inches of rain in the night with a severe electrical storm. Poesta creek rose thirty feet in three hours flooding western and southern sections and inundating much of the town. Over sixty houses swept away and about 200 made homeless, with several fatalities feared. Both railroad bridges across the creek were destroyed and county tracks washed away. total property loss estimated around forty thousand dollars.
A Karnes City report says eleven Mexicans camping on Medio creek near Normania were drowned Thursday as a flood submerged the valley. Six feet of water flooded Normania and Pettus, washing out tracks of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass road and destroying thousands of acres of corn and cotton. Two Mexicans were drowned near Mineral City, about six miles from Normania.
Philadelphia records one death from heat and three prostrations by 8 AM Friday. John Conrey collapsed at work and died in a hospital. The 8 AM temp stood at 81 degrees with 55 percent humidity, one degree hotter than the day before.
In Lexington Kentucky on July 3 reports say General Cassius M. Clay is believed hopelessly insane at his fifty eight room Whitehall mansion in Madison County. Physicians were admitted only to request medical attention but access was refused and his body guard remains the only person allowed in his bedroom in ten months.
Chief Justice Alton B. Parker of the New York Court of Appeals addressed Georgia Bar members in Tallulah Falls on due process of law. He traced the Magna Charta origin, discussed police power eminent domain and taxation, and praised the Fourteenth Amendment and the Supreme Court for protecting state rights. He cited civil rights acts and warned against overreach by Congress.
St Petersburg July 3 The Russian foreign office states only the czar can decide if a petition by Russian Jews will be received. It warns that admitting all American citizens would invite thousands of Jews to Russia, comparing to Roumania Bulgaria and Turkey, and notes the United States limits immigration.
Knoxville July 3 six prisoners attempted to break jail at Jonesboro Tennessee but were thwarted by a constable and subdued. The men were seized with no injuries reported and the incident is under investigation by local authorities.
Thursday night six men confronted Officer Hankal at the jail entrance after being on the public road. Snuff blown into the officer’s eyes, efforts to smother him with a blanket and seize his keys. He overpowered the six assailants and retrieved a public safety item as they fled to their cells. Knives, wire, and rocks were found during a search.
