Dozen Die in Great Northern Wreck Near Chiwaukum
A Jan. 21 tail-end collision five miles west of Chiwau kum on the Great Northern killed twelve men and injured as many more. An Ek–komish lumber load and three cars shifted into a rotary snow, burying twenty five workers under wreckage. No names of the dead were obtainable.

George Van Buren a famed scout in the northwest died by suicide in his Rattlesnake valley cabin in Missoula. He aged sixty claimed lineage to President Van Buren and served under General Howard during the Nez Perces pursuit and was sent by General Miles to the Custer action days after the massacre.
