Train excursion from Bryan to Marlin and Waco on August 1 and 8 opens round trip fares priced at 1.00 to Marlin and 1.50 to Waco. Return tickets valid only on the special train from Waco at 9:30 p.m. and from Marlin at 10:88 p.m. August 18 arriving Bryan at 2:55 a.m. Agent W. S. Wilson handles sales.
Mrs Fannie Reese Pugh announces the opening of Mrs Pugh's School for Girls in Bryan Texas on Monday September 16. The school will admit only pupils in sixth grade and higher with nine months of solid work. Tuition is five dollars per month in advance and good board is available for out of town pupils. Port Eads and Shell Beach suffer severe flood and wind damage as a Gulf coast storm advances west. Wires to Port Eads are down since Tuesday night, with reports of drowned families near Jump, Port Eads, and multiple vessels lost or submerged along the river. Shell Beach and Lake Borgne area bear widespread destruction as Lake Pontchartrain coast towns report no further lines.
Last from Mobile reports a Gulf Coast tropical storm isolating Mobile Alabama from the outside world. Water floods three feet in the Western Union office with a weary AP operator atop the switchboard sending word of rising water and 50 mph winds. By Thursday evening the business district was deserted as the flood worsened and communications failed.
Authorities fear loss of life near Fort Morgan as storm impact spreads through Mississippi Sound. Inhabited low-lying islets rise only four to five feet above normal water, with bayside resorts and summer homes affected along both shores.
San Francisco reports Arch Rock near Alcatraz Island and Lime Point was blasted away using over 30 tons of nitroglycerin. The underwater rock, extensive in size, surfaced debris spread across the bay, sending a 1000 foot water and rock column aloft and rattling the city. Large quantities of fish were destroyed by the blast.
The Choctaw Oklahoma and Gulf railway receives approval for a $2,000,000 capital extension aiming to link with the Fort Worth and Denver line for through traffic to Denver. Construction starts, with some sections ready by March 1 and full through service by May 1, including a Tecumseh branch to access cattle country. Austin also records the Beaumont Central Asphalt and Refining Company charter with a $2 million capital to build a Beaumont refinery converting crude oil into asphalt and byproducts.
In Rockdale Texas on August 16 J C Wat 600 assistant postmaster was shot and killed inside the post office receiving two wounds. The weapon was a Colt’s revolver. Lee Batte of Cameron surrendered and was admitted to bail set at 5000 after an examining trial before Justice Kennon. Family trouble blamed for the shooting. Katie and Watson were brothers in law.
The Democratic state convention nominated Judge Hermai Yorkes of Doylestown for supreme court and Representative Amrow J. Helm of Meadville for state treasurer. Resolutions passed unanimously to block any Quay candidate on a fusion ticket or substitution of an anti Quay Republican.
Hal ley Lewis is arrested in South McAlester charged as a train robber from the Missouri Kansas and Texas hold up near Caney Tuesday. George Brown reportedly confessed implicating seven men under arrest. defendants to be tried and bound over.
Postmaster General orders two Houston sub stations opened October 1 to handle money order and registry business and to sell postal supplies. London dispatches discuss Windofftein fight claims with five or six cases of shooting British wounded by Boers.
