Brunswick, Ga. May 20, 1916. A reader endorses J. E. Mercer on forming volunteers for war while noting the National Guard has priority under new law. The letter argues regulars and volunteers compete for service and supports citizen readiness in wartime.
Washington announces new designs for the dime quarter and half dollar to take effect after July 1. The half dollar, dime, and quarter each feature distinct designs by notable sculptors Adolph A Weinmann Hermon A MecNeil and symbolize liberty unity and national strength. The changes mark the first redesign of these coins since 1891 with the 1916 Liberty date on the quarter and new mottoes including In God We Trust on the half dollar and quarter. The dime shows a winged cap Liberty and a bundle of rods and battleaxe on the reverse symbolizing national unity.
