London May 28 the most elaborate welcome yet given to any arriving American unit was a luncheon and tea at Sir Thomas Lipton’s country home for the doctors and nurses of the Harvard medical unit en route to France. British officers and theatrical figures helped entertain. MP Arthur Shirley Benn praised the United States and President Wilson, while Major Patterson spoke for the unit.

George Creel explains aims to classify information as general naval and military and notes rules may be amended as the war progresses. Copies are mailed to all daily newspapers.
The secretary of the navy named Rear Admiral William S Sims as vice admiral to lead American naval operations in European waters. The appointment cites his Paris attaché work, supply duties in the Spanish-American War, role as fleet intelligence officer, and leadership of target practice reform and Allied cooperation before U.S. entry into World War I.
A string of tornadoes across Illinois Kentucky Mississippi Arkansas Tennessee and Alabama has killed more than 2400 people and injured over 1200. The storms damaged thousands of homes and crops with Mary toon and Charleston losses reaching two million dollars. The worst fatalities clustered near Hickman Kentucky and in Jefferson and Blount counties Alabama.

Havana May 28 Two Cubans and one Spaniard were hurt when a bomb exploded in the hold of the American steamer Lakawanna as it discharged coal. Captain Johnson believes the blast was caused by a bomb placed in the ship at Norfolk.
Washington May 28. The new federal employes compensation commission begins a safety survey of navy yards arsenals and other hazardous government workplaces. It aims to learn working conditions to administer the compensation act intelligently and reduce accidents and injuries.
