Verdun siege breakthrough fuels French victory at Douaumont

Paris reports a dramatic French assault northeast of Verdun penetrated Fort Douaumont. General Nivelle’s forces drive Germans from almost all of the fort, with fierce counterattacks on the Meuse front. West of the river Hill 295 becomes no man’s land as fighting continues and French gains are celebrated in Paris.

Plead Guilty On Liquor Charges In Georgia Court

The first trials under the new prohibition laws resulted in convictions in superior court. W M Clarence pleaded guilty to possessing more than the legal amount of liquor and Harry Stevens followed with a similar plea. Each received twelve months in jail or a $100 fine plus costs. Both defendants are colored and claimed they bought the whiskey eight quarts for themselves and a friend.

Eleventh district politics center in Waycross meeting

Waycross hosts the Eleventh district executive committee meeting led by J. G. Crawford of Valdosta and H. F. duBignon of Brunswick. The group will set September 12 as the congressional primary date and discuss rules, with debate over county unit versus majority plans amid a four‑way candidate field including Langford Bowden Thomas and Walker.

Special Train Planned for Knights Templar Conclave Delegates

Anticipating heavy travel for the thirty third triennial Knights Templar conclave in Los Angeles June 17 to 23 a special train will run from Atlanta June 18 to the Pacific coast via Birmingham Memphis Kansas City Colorado Springs Albuquerque and Grand Canyon. New Man to Manage Local Ship Plant at Brunswick

W. H. Rutland of New York has been chosen by Brunswick Marine Construction to manage the local ship building plant. He arrives as C. G. Huggins departs for Wilmington on Apex Equipment business. Postal Savings Limit Raised In New Act

President Wilson signed an amendment increasing the Postal Savings maximum to 1000 dollars per depositor. Monthly deposits are now unlimited. The change ends the previous 100 dollar monthly cap and expands access as Burleson and Dockery hailed the reform, noting half a million depositors hold eighty million dollars.

Will Sell Silver Pesos to Indians

Jeremiah L. Manning insular treasurer returns from China with agreement to sell 7.5 million silver pesos to the Indian government at a 20 percent profit. Bullion to be shipped immediately as British officials take over the coin at Manila. Manning had set out May 13 to sell 20 million pesos stored at Corregidor amid China's and India's silver shortage and high premiums.

Meuse Front Battles Near Verdun Intensify

French forces briefly abandoned a small Verdun sector to limit losses then reoccupied it as fighting raged on the Meuse through the night. German counterattacks on Hill 304 failed, liquid gas used in west assaults, and heavy losses reported as German forces briefly retook a trench north of Thiaumont farm amid ongoing combat around Thiaumont and Devaumont.

First Brunswick Marriage Since May Seventh Performed

The first marriage in Brunswick since May 7 was solemnized Monday night with Ordinary Edwin W. Dart officiating. William C. Pierce of Saulzberger and Sons, Norfolk, Virginia, wed Miss Ella N. Freeman who came from Savannah. The ceremony occurred at Ordinary Dart's Glynn avenue home, and the couple departed for Norfolk after a brief Brunswick stopover.

Pulp mill plans postponed after Brunswick meeting

After two days in session the Yaryan Rosin and Turpentine directors terminated meetings without action on a large pulp mill for the turpentine plant here. The project will be studied further. Visiting officials Theodore Hemmelmann Jr. of St Louis and H C Truesdall of Toledo were pleased with progress. local hosts included James S Brailey and Albert Fendig.

Seventeen Brunswick High School graduates announced

Seventeen students will graduate this June from Brunswick High School. Fifteen girls and two boys form the class. Valedictorian Eugenia Harris and salutatorian Louise Stevens head a list including Margaret McGarvey, historian Mary King Hilsman, and others. Graduation will be on a large scale with an extensive program to be announced.

Crop disaster in Russia reported by Stockholm advices

A crop disaster in Russia is reported via Stockholm cables to Sayville. All winter crops in northern and middle Russian governments are said to have been destroyed by severe frost before a forthcoming convention. The event list includes talks on hotel associations and launching hotels by named speakers from Atlanta, Macon, Columbus, and Savannah.
