No More Colored Men Enlisted in Local Service

Sergt Frank Peterson in charge of the local recruiting office received Washington instructions yesterday to cease enlisting colored men for service. The move does not reflect on the negro soldier, who answered the war call with patriotism. These men were enlisted for Philippine service and the required number has been secured.

Mills Blast at Cedar Rapids Wrecks Mills and Kills Many

Cedar Rapids May 22 A blast at Douglas Starch works killed scores and wounded hundreds as about 150 workers were inside the plant when the explosion occurred. Firemen could not estimate the death toll as the force threw people from chairs and debris filled the area. Officials said the cause was unknown and damage ran into millions.

Hurley Boost Atlantic Ports

Washington May 22 The ports of Wilmington Savannah Charleston Jacksonville Pensacola Mobile New Orleans and Brunswick have developed largely in recent years according to Emergency Fleet Corp Chairman Hurley. He told National Labor Agriculture and Industrial organizations that terminal facilities have improved and will handle ships cargoes in both directions.

Heads U. S. Road Building Program

Mr. MacDonald is named director of the office of public roads and rural engineering. He will supervise federal funds of 175 million dollars and a matching state share for nationwide road construction as part of the reconstruction drive. He comes from Iowa State College with many years in highway work as head of the lone highway commission.
