A massive fire began at Fort and Decatur streets and swept northward through Atlanta, causing between 3 and 5 million dollars in damage and leaving thousands homeless. A West End blaze destroyed 25 houses, while dynamiting saved others. Martial law was declared in the affected zone, with 2,000 troops and major help from Augusta, Macon, Griffin, Chattanooga, and Marietta responding.
