Selective Draft Becomes Law Across Southern States

President Wilson signed the selective draft bill. All national guard units will enter federal service between July 16 and August 5. States from Georgia to California are listed for assembly with dates, and governors are authorized to mobilize to war strength. Cantonment camps will be in southeastern, southern, and western departments.

Great Parade in Atlanta Honors Flag Raising

Atlanta today hosts what is billed as the greatest military parade in the city’s history to honor General Leonard A. Wood raising a community flag. It features the Seventeenth Infantry U S A officers’ training school at Fort McPherson Atlanta National Guard units and brass bands and drum corps with a flag-raising review from a stand near the Fourth National Bank.

Liberty Loan 10 Deposited With Eligible Banks

The treasury announces proceeds of the Liberty Loan will be deposited in banks and trust companies qualified as depositories for subscriptions of at least 100000. Where possible other institutions forwarding similar amounts will be treated later. The government will receive percent interest and aims to advance about 1 HHON0000 to the allies before July 1.

New Training School Proposed by Southern Baptists

In New Orleans on May 18 the Southern Baptist convention planned a new training school for home and foreign missionaries and discussed a new finances system proposed by the Maryland Union association. Other topics included home missions temperance social service and education. The Woman's Missionary Union planned resolutions and officer elections. A Louisville Ky site for the new missionary training school reported readiness by Oct 1 with $100,000 raised.

Cotton Manufacturers Meet at St Simon Island

The Cotton Manufacturers association holds its annual meeting at St Simon Island in June 9 with an interesting program. Senator Hardwick will deliver the principal address and Mrs Nellie Peters Black of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs will attend. Special focus on group insurance and old age pensions for cotton mill workers. A boat excursion will follow the sessions.

Baker Visits Training Camps at Fort Myer

Secretary Baker visited the officers training camp at Fort Myer Virginia and watched a drill. He said he was pleased with the showing and the number of men who had completed training.

Tax on Untilled Land Draws Brunswick Debate

A proposed revenue bill includes a heavy land tax plan. One option taxes grazing timber turpentine and cut over lands at 1.00 per acre. Another would tax lands with seal gas iron or other deposits at 30 per acre. Local landowners fear overtaxation while some plan to oppose the measure in Congress.

Rockingham survivors reach New York after torpedo attack

The British steamer rescued fourteen crew members and naval gunners from the American Rockingham after it was torpedoed and sunk off the Irish coast on March 4. Two men were killed. The survivors, including Third Officer Arthur McKenny and thirteen gunner-naval, said they were adrift in an open boat for forty eight hours about 140 miles north of the sinking site. They reported adequate provisions and water and no hardships.

Resisted Policeman Taken to Jail After Confrontation

Frank Clifton allegedly threatened to kill his wife on Stonewall Street. Officer Drury detained him after he resisted arrest and struck him with a persuader, leaving Clifton unconscious and jailed. He was fined £26 and must pay or face 60 days absence from home.

Funeral for Brunswick youth Eu gene Marlin draws vast crowd

A large concourse from Brunswick paid respects at Eu gene C. Marlin's funeral in Palmetto cemetery after a sudden death. Services were led by Rev. O. F. Gilbert with Rev. D. Watson Winn assisting. Merchants closed early in mourning. Masons Knights of Pythias and local lodges attended.

Daylight Bill Advances in Senate Favoring Time Shift

Savannah Subscribes Two Dollars for Vet Trip to Washington

Savannah residents donate two dollars for the Washington reunion trip for local veterans. Savannah newspapers opened subscription lists and received dollar donations from supporters. Phil Willis a well known negro was fined 25 dollars yesterday by Mayor Hopkins in police court for cruelly whipping a dog owned by Frank Martin the Mallory Line watchman at the foot of Mansfield street. Willis faces 60 days imprisonment and possible grand jury indictment as evidence against him is reported convincing.
