City Council Handles Busy Session and Contracts

City council met in regular session with full board present for over two hours. The Norwich sidewalk contract was awarded to Logan Coal and Supply Co of Jacksonville for about $7,000 with bids of 94 cents per square yard for sidewalk, 19 1 2 cents per linear foot for four by eight curbing and 9 1 2 cents per linear foot for three by eight curbing.

City Court Dockets and Verdicts Reported

Judge Krauss presided as a busy docket wrapped with several cases in City Court. A libel suit Kennon Mott versus J D Hirsh yielded a $1 verdict for the plaintiff after a prolonged jury deliberation. Notable criminal outcomes included Manny Brown pleading guilty to a misdemeanor with nine months or a $100 fine, Joe Young found not guilty of larceny, Prince Jackson pleading guilty to gaming with four months or a $25 fine, William Carey and Thomas Leonard convicted with penalties totaling $250 or 12 months, and Georgia Austin found guilty with nine months or $150 plus costs.

Roosevelt Delivers World Movement Lecture in Berlin

Theodore Roosevelt former U S president gave his talk on the World Movement at the University of Berlin and received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree. Emperor William attended the event with Col Roosevelt joining him as four hundred guests were seated. The kaiser heard a historic review of the world movement without favor to any single country.

Brunswick Children to View Halley’s Comet This Morning

Brunswick school children will view Halley’s comet from the boulevard near the lake this morning. Teachers will join groups from several grades so pupils can get a good look at the celestial visitor as crowds along the boulevard grow each day this week.

Man Sentenced to Sixty Days for False Fire Alarm

W. B. Higgins, a young white man, was convicted in municipal court Monday of maliciously sending in a false fire alarm. He faces 60 days on the city chain or a $100 fine. Higgins sought money from relatives in Thomasville without success and will begin serving his sentence this morning.

Rock Island contractor Testifies Faints in Bribery Inquiry

Chicago May 12 Thomas Cox a Rock Island Jr contractor fainted in the grand jury room at the criminal court building while being examined as a witness in the legislative bribery investigation in progress today.

River Steamer City of Pattillo Strikes Rock Founds Near St Louis

The Mississippi steamer City of Pattillo hit a rock and foundered near Glen Park twenty four miles south of St Louis. Two women passengers Miss Anna Rhea and Mrs Isaac T Rhea of Nashville are drowned. Capt Crane reports many missing. boat carried twenty seven passengers and thirty crew. The disaster happened at night with chaos amid a voyage to Waterloo Alabama.

He Was Given A Divorce Yet Remains A Married Man

V Pinabad of this city seeks to prove he is the husband of his former wife after Glynn County court granted a divorce. The Georgia Supreme Court reversed the trial court ruling, declaring the divorce valid and leaving the status unresolved. Robbers Hold Up South Park Streetcar in Seattle

Three bandits robbed a South Park streetcar in Seattle this morning taking between 1500 and 2000 dollars in cash and jewelry. Twenty riders were aboard the car and the heaviest losses fell on salon keepers and bartenders returning home after a night shift.

Miners Entombed After Wellington Mine Blast

An explosion at the Wellington coal mine in Whitehaven traps 136 miners underground. Rescue teams save four near the shaft bottom but gas blocks access to the imprisoned workers. Grim anxiety rises as 85 hewers and over 50 shift men remain in the three mile distant section amid toxic fumes.

Referee 15 Upheld in Hawkinsville Bank Case Appeal

In Valdosta Judge Emory Speer sustained Referee Max Isaac ruling in Hawkinsville Bank and Trust Co v W J Smith Waycross. The higher court affirmed Isaac, despite public criticism by Judge J L Sweat who faced contempt charges. The contempt case remains before Judge Speer.

Sherman to tour summer in defense of Payne tariff law

Vice President Sherman will speak throughout the summer except August to back the Payne tariff law and aid Republican congressional candidates. Florida Dreadnaught Launched With Spectacle in New York

In the presence of Governor Gilchrist and navy leaders, the Florida was launched with Miss Elizabeth Fleming breaking a wine bottle on the bow. The 9,000 ton hull, about 65 percent complete, required a tug fleet to guide it past the Williamsburg Bridge as a holiday for Brooklyn navy yard workers was declared by President Taft.
