Train wreck kills six near Hattiesburg

A wreck on the New Orleans & North Eastern near Hattiesburg Mississippi killed six people including passengers and trainmen after the train jumped a track and crashed through a trestle.

A wreck of train No. 1 near Hattiesburg Mississippi this morning kills sixteen people including six trainmen and ten passengers and injures twenty six passengers. Three passengers are missing according to a Journal dispatch.

Wreck of Confederate Reunion Special Kills and Injures Dozens

A derailment near Gunn's Mill on the New Orleans and North Eastern railroad killed four trainmen and six or more passengers and injured about forty others. The Texas Confederate reunion special en route to Macon Ga. left the track at 8 45 a m. Five bodies were brought to Hattiesburg on the cars. The dead include Mrs Charles Holmes Bay Springs Tex Mrs James Cameron Henderson Tex and engineer Billy Wood of Hattiesburg. Several others are missing under the wreckage and a morgue and hospital were improvised at the scene. Five doctors and three nurses aided victims.

Fernandina and Brunswick Open Baseball Season

The first junior league game of the season is set this afternoon at the baseball park. Brunswick faces Fernandina with a 3 30 pm start and admission 15 and 25 cents. Democratic executive committee to name delegates

The Democratic executive committee meets at the courthouse at 11 this morning to name delegates to the state convention in Atlanta on May 28 and, if chosen, delegations to the national convention in Baltimore. Four delegates and four alternates are likely. Brantley supporters push for him as a national delegate at large possible in Baltimore.

Mrs Opie Grace Indicted In Husband Assault Case

Atlanta Ga May 6 Mrs Daltsy Opie Grace indicted today on assault with intent to murder Eugene H Grace whom she is accused of shooting March 13 in their home. Early trial sought. Grace defends innocence claiming burglar attack. He remains hospitalized paralyzed from the waist down.

Funeral of Atkinson Brown Held After Train Tragedy

The body of Atkinson Brown, a popular Mt. Pleasant youth killed when struck by a Southern Railway freight train, was funeralized at 10 o clock from the Union Street home. Rev. Loy Warwick led services as a quartet sang two hymns. Floral remembrances poured in including one from the Order of Railway Trainmen. Maryland Primary In Doubt As Returns Trickled In

Maryland voters cast ballots in a tight presidential primary with Taft leading Roosevelt among Republicans and three Democrats Clark Harmon Wilson contesting. Early returns favored Clark, but no majority settled, possibly forcing a convention decision. In South Carolina conventions Governor Blease led in Newberry, while Wilson gained momentum in several counties as unions and uncommitted delegates emerged.

Judge Conyers Presiding Over Bryan County Superior Court

Judge C. B. Conyers leaves this morning for Clyde in Bryan county to preside over the Bryan county superior court in place of Judge Sheppard of the Atlantic circuit. Several cases await trial while Judge Sheppard is disqualified. Conyers is invited to help and will return to the city later this week.

Levee Labor Pressed as Heavy Rains Halt Work in New Orleans

Heavy rains slow efforts by federal and state engineers and about 8 000 laborers to strengthen Mississippi levees from the Red River to Natchez. Cattle drownouts, marooned residents, and rising water threaten Batchelor and Atchafalaya Bayou des Glaize districts as boats run short and revetments advance slowly.

City Council Adopts Tax Rate and Approves Town Commons Deeds

City council met in adjourned session to pass the tax rate ordinance on its first reading and approveoms. The special committee reported favorably on Town Commons conversion applications and deeds will be issued. Alderman Lee proposed a $200 repair appropriation for the pumping station. An ordinance to tighten sanitary laws requiring weekly cleaning of yards and stock-keeping areas was read. John Byrd elected sexton of the colored cemetery succeeding the late Jackie White. Accounts were ordered to remain in settlement.

Outlook Bright for Encampment at Woodmen Meeting

At a large Woodmen of the World camp meeting discussions focused on securing the encampment of the uniform rank for the Fifth division covering Georgia South Carolina and Florida. Brunswick appears favored by many company commanders with Newton E. Phillips lauded for recruiting 110 new members and planned travel to Savannah.

Joint Meeting Decides on Appropriation for Chamber

A joint meeting of the city council and Glynn county commissioners will convene at the courthouse at 10 30 AM to decide on appropriating 2000 for the Brunswick chamber of commerce. The committee urges full funding, but a substantial sum appears likely with a four thousand dollar first year need cited by the committee chairman Twitty and others.

Motorcyclists Urged to Slow Down Citywide

Local riders face arrest and fines for speeding under city ordinances. Alderman Ludwig presided as a young motorcyclist received a $15 fine for the first court appearance on this charge, warning heavier penalties for future arraignments. Speeding at 25 to 30 mph is common on business streets, risking serious accidents if reckless driving continues.

Douglas Cadets Return From St Simon Camp

The Eleventh District Agricultural College cadets at Douglas returned from a week at St Simon. They praised the island and the military camp life. Commander J E Creel lauded St Simon as an ideal camping ground and thanked Brunswick and St Simon residents, especially Tilton pavilion helpers.
