California Senate Backs Antialien Land Bill After Ten Hours

Sacramento May 9. The senate approved the antialien land holding bill by a 36 to 2 vote after ten hours of debate. Key provisions allow citizens and some aliens to own land while restricting land ownership for ineligible aliens, with leases limited to three years and inheritance restricted. A companion measure is expected in the assembly and to be signed by Gov. Johnson after tests from President Wilson.

A Chicago report cites the Journal of the American Medical Association stating murderers show subnormal body temperature and abnormal pulse and respiration. Supt N H Ballard of Glynn county public schools said a population census for Brunswick and Glynn county should be ready within ten days. He noted the city census is under way with school boys helping and warned previous city census figures were inaccurate, so current totals may surprise locals.

English Countess of Cottenham Found Dead

The Countess of Cottenham was found dead in a wood near Elveden Priory in Oxfordshire with a revolver wound. Authorities could not determine if it was murder or suicide. The deceased, born Lady Rose Nevill in 1866, was daughter of the Marquis of Abergavenny.

Bodies of Disaster Victims Found in River

Clayton Louisiana May 3 14 bodies recovered from the river after the Concordia steamboat disaster that killed many on the big river. Another victim Jon Daniels died from injuries and several others are expected to die. Most dead are flood refugees and Black crew members with a mix of white passengers and crew. The vessel carried 72 flood refugees and sank after passing the railroad bridge on the Tensas River.
