SAB-STATION NO 1 RE-ESTABLISHED IN BRUNSWICK

Brunswick reopens subpostoffice station No. 1 at Bryant’s bookstore after a April 1 closure by the postoffice department to cut costs. Residents had relied on the station for stamps beyond regular hours and its business had grown. officials say it will reopen this morning.

Clergy Refuse Total Abstinence in Temperance Debate

London April 30 The clergy in the lower house of the Canterbury convocation back a temperance example but oppose total abstinence. They passed a resolution urging clergy and laity to show self restraint toward alcoholic liquors with several members voting only after assurance that complete abstinence was not required. The Dean of Canterbury said he could not swear off entirely noting past failure and health impact.

Leo Arnold Awarded Carnegie Medal for Surf Rescue

Leo Arnold of St Simon received a Carnegie medal for bravery for rescuing Miss Emma Finch from drowning in the surf at St Simon on August 15 1912. W E Hawes of Atlanta drowned while trying to save Finch. Arnold saved Finch and a ceremony is noted with medals ranging from 800 to 2000 dollars.

In Syracuse on April 30 new Albany politics notes surfaced at William Barnes libel trial against Theodore Roosevelt. Harvey D. Hinman described 1911 senate votes and primaries battles as part of Roosevelt’s bid to prove Barnes’s control of the Republican state organization. Governor Whitman confirmed a letter he wrote weeks before was released.

Wilson Denies Endorsement of Controversial Film

W H Lewis a Boston Black former assistant attorney general and Bishop Alexander Walters visited the White House to question reports that President Wilson backed a moving picture depicting Reconstruction South scenes in a manner displeasing to Black people. Secretary Tumulty presented a letter stating the film was once shown as a courtesy to a former classmate and the president had no knowledge of its nature or approval.

Nashville April 30 Governor Rye of Tennessee received a threatening letter written in Italian signed Blackband The note carries a black cross and predicts a cross on the governor's tombstone police are investigating the threat.

Allied bombardment and landings seal Gallipoli position

London dispatch reports the Allied fleet bombarded Turkish fortifications at Dardanelles while troops landed. Ships pounded Kalid Bahr and Cha nak forts as transports moved in. Turks sent brief fire before airship bombs wiped out their battery. By evening the Allies held the Gallipoli tip and Sulla Bay shore ten miles from the narrows with forts in the narrows under pressure.

Mrs Jennie McIntire Dead in Seattle Funeral in Frederica

Information arrived yesterday of the death of Mrs Jennie Agnes McIntire in Seattle. She was the widow of B Fr McIntire and daughter of Horace and Mrs Gould of St Simon. Survived by two sons Horace and Gould and six sisters and three brothers. Funeral planned for Frederica with body to be brought here.

English Author Decorated by Emperor with Iron Cross

Berlin reports that Houston Stow art Chamberlain the English writer living in Germany since 1885 was awarded the non combatant’s iron cross by Emperor William. German papers published letters from him with his consent blaming England for the war and ending with prayers to God to protest the German cause and mankind’s future.

High School Talk Series Opens for Boys Audience

A recent auditorium program at the high school opened a series of talks aimed at guiding boys toward future careers. D Wass G W Harper and J G Weathall spoke for fifteen minutes each, drawing interest from students and several girls and adults in attendance. C H Leavy of The Ne wlis was scheduled but detained. Henry W Real spoke on The Choice as one of the evening’s highlights. The series is planned to continue and is expected to become a notable feature of school life for boys.
