Lost Balloonists Return After Sierra Nevada Ordeal

Captain Mueller the balloon America pilot and five companions, missing since last Saturday after ascending from Pasadena, Pasadena area, reached Switzer camp near Passadena late today. They were blown to Coulter's ranch, 56 miles from the start, during a blizzard and had been trudging back to Pasadena in a wore-down condition.

Police report three men were detained in connection with the Willie Whitla kidnapping. Ransom money, left by the boy’s father, was traced to a woman associated with the suspected plot.

Drowning of Russian Sailor Lahin Aboard Ashti

While loading the deck on the Russian bark Ashti in the lower bay a sailor named Lahin, about 28, fell overboard and drowned before a lifeboat could reach him. The ship was prepared for sea on Monday and the accident was reported to Coroner Jennings and Collector of Port Duna. Despite all efforts the body could not be recovered. The crew watched Lahin sink after the third plunge.

Wholesale firms in Brunswick Georgia agreed to halt sales to retail dealers after 1 PM each Saturday from the first Saturday in April 1909 through the last Saturday in September 1909 with nonperishable goods only. Well Known Negro Preacher Found Dead In Bed

Rev. M. Roberts a respected black preacher of 207 Johnson Street was found dead in bed yesterday morning by his son. Coroner Jennings deemed no inquest necessary after noting a heart ailment had afflicted him for some time. He leaves a wife and three sons. Roberts urged his race to learn trades and become steady workers and home builders.

Dumb Beasts Friend Spent Life For Them

Boston notes that George T. Angell founder of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals refused salaries offered between 5000 and 10000 yearly and dedicated his life to the cause. In his will he directed all society income to be returned. He published the Our Dumb Friends monthly and mailed it to editors nationwide.

Payne Talks Four Hours on His Bill

Washington March 24 Representative Payne defended the tariff bill he authored for over five hours and grew fatigued enough to lean on his desk. He argued the bill would not hurt tinplate and steel file industries and said free hides would not threaten farmers.
