Taggart Appointed United States Senator from Indiana

Indiana appoints Thomas Taggart, longtime Democratic leader and former Indianapolis mayor, to fill the Senate vacancy caused by Shively's death. Gov. Savannah Folk Head to Jacksonville Tour of Local Notables

A group of Savannah automobiles carrying well known residents departed Sunday toward Jacksonville. The travelers included Mr. and Mrs. George W. Tiedeman, Frank Battery and Miss Battery, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Granger, O. F. Cooper, and others. A second subgroup arrived yesterday afternoon, with plans to leave for Jacksonville this morning, joined by C. W. Atkinson, W. J. Atkinson and FE E. Choner of Waynesboro. The party will return tomorrow afternoon with the Dixie highway commissioners.

Old Negro Employee Given a Service Medal

Birmingham on March 20 146 employees on the Southern railway Mobile and Birmingham divisions honored for 25 years of service receiving loyalty medals presented by President Fairfax Harrison. Talver Parkman a colored hammerman in Selma shop received a medal dating to 1858 when enslaved by the Alabama and Tennessee River Railroad, now part of the Southern's Mobile division. Medals went to ranks including a general freight agent assistant general freight agent a general agent two division superintendents and two division counsels.

Washington notes detail General Carranza protesting American troops occupying Casas Grandes while the United States says troops were ordered not to occupy Mexican towns. German forces bombarded Malancourt and attacked French positions at Cote de Peyre but the effort failed, according to the French war office announcement this afternoon. Intermittent shelling continued in the Vaux region.

British prize crew sails with Kong-Inge to Copenhagen

London report journals say the Norwegian steam ship Kong Inge from Christiana arrived in Copenhagen under a British prize crew of six. The Konge Inge was stopped yesterday by a British submarine off Falkenberg Sweden.

City Introduces New One Ton Auto Truck for Trial

The city bought a one ton capacity automobile truck from International Harvester last week. It arrived in Brunswick yesterday morning and will be used by the public works department for testing. If the experiment shows cost savings, three more trucks may be purchased to motorize the department.

Voters Slow to Qualify for County Primary

Voters linger to qualify for the April 18 primary as many registered two years ago have not paid state and county taxes. Taxpayers who paid taxes qualify to vote, but those not registered in 1914 must register this year. Books close April 10, with most voters expected to be on the books by then.

First Woman Sentenced to Death Seeks Clemency

In Raleigh North Carolina on March 20 formal petitions for commutation to life imprisonment were filed for Ida Ball Warren and Samuel Preston Christy. They were condemned for the 1914 murder of G. J. Warren in Winston-Salem. Warren would be the state s first woman electrocuted and Governor Craig will weigh the clemency pleas on their merits. The couple faces execution March 31 after the Supreme Court affirmed the conviction and the US Supreme Court denied a writ of error.

Colored man cut at Baker home on Amherst street

Ben Benton, colored, was seriously cut about the abdomen by Joe Baker, colored, at Baker's Amherst street home yesterday. Benton was reported to be doing as well as could be expected. Baker was captured and jailed. Benton rushed to city hospital. Baker claimed self defense.

Plans Complete for Baby Week in Brunswick

The Brunswick Baby Week committee joins Southeastern Sanitary Association events on March 24 and 25 at Oglethorpe. Big Tank Rise Near Gloucester Street Corner

A mammoth turpentine storage tank is being erected at Gloucester Street corner to meet demand. The project proceeds rapidly and should be completed soon. The event accompanies Brunswick tourism as First Regiment band may play at the Oglethorpe, Elks Club hosts open house, and a two dollar per plate dinner funds the dance.

Allied air raid on Zeebrugge and surrounding actions

Sixty five allied aeroplanes bombarded Zeebrugge on the Belgian coast with about six half tons of explosives. The raid involved British French and Belgian aircraft plus fifteen Marines. most returned with no losses though one Belgian officer was seriously wounded.

Save All Waste Paper Campaign Urged by Government

The United States Department of Commerce asks local organizations to launch a publicity drive to promote saving rag paper and other scrap material for papermaking. It cites a daily US production of about 15 000 tons of paper and boards and notes much can be recycled into cheap paper instead of waste. The effort aims to reduce demand on new materials through public care.

Brunswick Riflemen Called to Report Readiness for Border Service

The Brunswick Riflemen and the Georgia militia are asked to report to the adjutant generals office in Atlanta with an accurate count of volunteers ready for service on the border or in Mexico. Lieutenant W. L. Harwell orders all Company G members to attend at 7:45 pm at the armory, with penalties for nonattendance.

Twin Beds on Grand stage draws roaring laughs

A pleasing comedy titled Twin Beds played at the Grand last night with a seven member all star cast. Salisbury Wield and Margaret Mayo crafted a farce aimed at pure laughter and delivered it with brisk pacing and strong performances. The audience enjoyed constant humor across the three acts and the production deserved a larger house.

Driver Wrecks AGL Engine Left Side Damaged

An accident occurred yesterday morning about 11 and a half miles from here when the left driving wheel of A C L engine No. 74 pulling Coast Line passenger train No. 1 was ripped off. The engine was demolished on the left side but only slight injuries occurred to Engineer Potter. Waycross sent an engine to bring the train to Brunswick and a wrecking train to remove the damaged locomotive for repairs.

Berlin imposes rationing on butter and potatoes

Berlin new regulations restrict butter and potato sales to those with distribution cards. Each person may buy 135 grams of butter weekly and ten pounds of potatoes every 12 days.
