Jesup Trial Opens in Lyons Murder Case

Judge Parker begins proceedings in the trial of Sheriff W B Lyons and son Archie for the Fleming Smith killing. The jury is seated with 12 members. spectators fill the courthouse as witnesses testify that Lyons spoke of Smith as unable to fight and that Smith claimed he had killed no one.

In Washington on March 18 the minority members of the Ways and Means Committee had only twelve minutes to review the Payne tariff bill before it was reported to the house without changes. Blaze destroys Louisville rail depot in massive fire

In Louisville Kentucky the large Illinois Central rail depot was destroyed by a fire early tonight. Loss is estimated at 400000 to 500000 dollars. Witnesses, including W I Brinson and D M Thomas, testified about shooting sequence and gunfire during the incident as prosecutors build a strong case against Lyons and his son.

A man visited the Sosa home and told the boy his father wanted him then disappeared. Sharon Pennsylvania residents scour the countryside with a five hundred strong posse as authorities issue a general alarm. The abductors have not demanded ransom and the case remains mysterious. Urge State Road Built to Columbus and Gulf Link

Apalachicola board of trade urges extending the Western and Atlantic line to Columbus Georgia and thence to a Gulf port via the Chattahoochee river. The aim is a direct navigable-water connection to Atlanta and Chattanooga and a shortest route to the Gulf and Panama Canal. The board asks Governor Smith and regulators to support the plan.

Local reports say chicken thieves remain active in Brunswick with most yards visited recently. Over two to three weeks the burglars have evaded capture, and on Wednesday night a large turkey was taken from J. W. Hall’s Union street yard.

Tributes to Late President Grover Cleveland

New York March 18 Tributes to Grover Cleveland were paid this afternoon and tonight by President Taft Governor Hughes Mayor McClellan Senator Root Judge Gray and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court ruler. The meeting at Carnegie Hall included Mrs Cleveland. Taft called Cleveland the first real reformer and compared him to Lincoln. Ex President Roosevelt sent a letter of appreciation read at the meeting.

Old Lumber Case Finally Settled

Interstate commerce commission yellow pine reparation cases settled by agreement. About $2,000,000 of reparation on a charge of 16 cents per hundred pounds for lumber shipped from southern yellow pine region east of the Mississippi. Railroads to pay Georgia Florida and eastern Alabama claimants 67 percent of provable claims.

Lumber People Are Not Pleased With Tariff Cut

Norfolk Virginia March 18 President Wosburgh of the North Carolina Pine association controlling a majority of eastern mills says the 50 percent lumber reduction proposed by the new tariff bill will ruin lumber manufacturers and mills along the Atlantic seaboard. He argues strong firms may endure but small operators could be driven out and Canadian lumber would flood the region. He adds that lumber interests will fight the reduction.

Fire destroys town hall and records in New Marlboro

Early morning fire razed the town hall at New Marlboro Mass wiping out all records since incorporation. A small bucket brigade tried to save the building but the loss is limited to under seven thousand dollars and the town meeting will be held in the Congregational church while repairs are planned. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

United States Judge Don A Pardee begins today hearing evidence in New Orleans in the Old Colony Trust Company action to close the mortgage on the Atlanta Birmingham and Atlantic railroad and appoint new receivers.
