Brunswick to Get Cotton Compress With Rail Support

Officials in Brunswick announce plans to erect a cotton compress owned by the Strachan Shipping Co. with cooperation from local rail lines. The project aims to boost port traffic and export business, targeting use for the upcoming cotton season. Key attendees included E F Norris, E H Shaw, James Menzies, C BE Brower, L EE Edwards, and Frank D M Strachan. Construction was ordered three months ago and timing is set for readiness for the next cotton season.

Old Time Mariner Frank Avery Dead at 58

Capt. Frank Brewster Avery, once a Brunswick resident, died in a New York hospital after months of illness. A renowned master and chief engineer, he led ships in and out of the St Johns river at night and held a coast wide pilot license. He is survived by Grace Avery and son Robert Gilbert Avery. funeral at 4:30 pm from Capt. Van B. Avery's home with burial in Bonaventure.

Gale says solicitor race in Brunswick circuit gains pace

Judge A D Gale, Brunswick candidate for solicitor general, returned from Camden county after visiting every county in the circuit. He reports broad support and plans to speak across the region before the primary. Brunswick Riflemen Rejected From Camp Harris

Fourteen members of the Brunswick Riflemen from Camp Harris Macon were rejected in strict examinations and will return to Brunswick today. Among those discharged were First Sergeant Clyde Howard Quartermaster Sergeant Jeff D Brown and several corporals and privates.

Senate Backs Clemency Plea for Irish Prisoners

The Senate voted 46 to 19 to ask President Wilson to urge Britain to show clemency toward Irish political prisoners, overruling the foreign relations committee which had opposed the measure. In a minority report, Stone O Gorman and Pittman urged some humane expression.

Citrus fruit could thrive on Glynn County says Dew

Entomologist James A. Dew reports few insects or diseases on St Simons Island citrus trees. He lists varieties including grapefruit Florida oranges Valencia Satsuma kumquats and lemons. He says Glynn County has 2000 to 3000 trees and urges local interest to develop a new agricultural industry under USDA oversight. Dew plans to finish Glynn inspections in a few days.
